BSC fall play to open Wednesday

The Bismarck State College Theatre fall play is "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" from Wednesday to Nov. 8.

Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Nov. 7 and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 8 in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium.

Steve Martin's comedy captures an imagined first encounter between passionate artist Pablo Picasso and fiery physicist Albert Einstein in 1904, just before they revolutionize world perceptions about art and the universe.

Reserved seat tickets are $10 or $3 with BSC ID and can be purchased at the Schafer Hall box office weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by calling 224-5511.

SMCHS to present 'Little Women'

The students of St. Mary's Central High School will present "Little Women."

The story is by Louisa May Alcott and adapted by Scott Davidson. It will be performed at 7:45 p.m. Thursday to Nov. 7 in the main gym at SMCHS, 1025 N. Second St.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for non-SMCHS students, $3 for SMCHS students and 5 and under are free.

Elks men's chorus names director

Gloria Knoll, former director of vocal and instrumental music at Horizon Middle School, has accepted the position of director of the Bismarck-Mandan Elks Men's Chorus.

A graduate of Wishek High School, Knoll earned her bachelor's degree in vocal and instrumental music from Moorhead State University. She also had done graduate work.

Knoll has nearly 40 years experience as choral and instrumental music in North Dakota, Georgia and North Carolina schools. In addition, she has served as director of several church choirs and is director at McCabe United Methodist.

Chorus rehearsals are 7 p.m. every Tuesday, September through June, at the Elks Lodge, 900 S. Washington St.

Heritage Center to show WWII film

A new documentary film telling the story of World War II through the eyes of nine veterans from McKenzie County in western North Dakota will be shown at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismarck.

The one-hour film, "Small Town Soldiers," is being shown in honor of Veterans Day.

The screening is free and open to the public.

As part of the program, Cody Shimek, the Watford City native who produced and directed the film, will discuss the making of the film.

Play will benefit DSU theater

DICKINSON - The comedy "The Marriage of Bette and Boo" will be presented at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 and at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13-14 at 32 First Ave. W.

A theater company, created by Dickinson State University theater alums and community actors, is attempting to draw attention to the revitalization of downtown Dickinson and raise funds for DSU theater student scholarships.

In addition, Burn the Floor Dance Studio will be performing between acts on Nov. 13 and 14. And a post party for the cast and audience, at which dessert and wine will be served for a small fee, will take place at the new Stix & Twigs Cafe, less than one block away.

Ticket prices for the event are $10 for adults and $7 for students and can be purchased at the DSU Alumni and Foundation house at 230 Eighth Ave. W. or by calling 701-483-2004. The play is recommended for mature audiences.

Author to discuss Eric Sevareid

The author of a biography of the American journalist and North Dakota native Eric Sevareid (1912-92) will discuss his book Nov. 12 at the North Dakota Heritage Center.

The program by Raymond A. Schroth, author of "The American Journey of Eric Sevareid," will begin at 7 p.m.

His talk, sponsored by Read North Dakota, is part of the consortium's focus on biographies of North Dakotans in 2009.

Prairie Public Broadcasting will air Schroth's program on its radio network during the "Hear It Now" program at 3 and 7 p.m. Nov. 19. It also will be broadcast on the television network of Prairie Public at 8 p.m. Nov. 19.

Met Live presents 'Turandot' Nov. 7

Director Franco Zeffirelli's production of Puccini's last opera, "Turandot," will be shown Nov. 7 at the Grand Theatres in Bismarck as part of the Met Live In HD series of performances.

The showing begins at noon with a running time of three hours, 21 minutes, with two intermissions.

Maria Guleghina plays the ruthless Chinese princess of the title, whose hatred of men is so strong that she has all suitors who can't solve her riddles beheaded. Marcello Giordani plays Calaf, the unknown prince who eventually wins her love and whose solos include the famous "Nessun dorma."

Andris Nelsons is the conductor.

And encore performance begins at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 18.

DSU art on display in Bowman library

DICKINSON -The Dickinson State University Introduction to the visual arts classes taught by Marie Snavely will be showing their art work at the Bowman Regional Public Library from Sunday through Nov. 29.

The showing will feature 100 works of art created during class period by 55 students who are primarily non art majors. Each work will be accompanied by a photograph of the artist and a short biography.

Orchestra to perform at Belle

The Concordia Orchestra from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., will present a concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Belle Mehus Auditorium, 201 N. Sixth St., Bismarck. For more information, call 355-1370. The performance is in cooperation with the orchestra programs of the Bismarck Public Schools. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert is part of the orchestra's 2009 tour.

The 2009 Concordia Orchestra concert tour will feature music by Berlioz, Stradella, Higdon and Saint-Saens.

U-Mary Men's Honor Choir concert is Saturday

The University of Mary Men's Honor Choir will present a concert Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public. Approximately 40 singers from 10 high schools will join the Honor Choir today and Saturday.

Today the students and choir will also sing the national anthem at the University of Mary volleyball game, and on Saturday will perform the national anthem for the U-Mary football game at the Community Bowl in Bismarck.
