Everyone is prepping for more snow today to add to the piles of white stuff the area is already buckling under.Road crews are looking at pulling longer shifts. A meteorologist says there will be blowing snow risks. And some residents are probably staring at their driveways and mailboxes, wondering when delivery will be restored and why getting out of their garage means a feat in car-versus-snowpile physics.
"Our mailbox is blocked and the snow was brought in by a snowplow,"said James Kubisiak, who lives on a cul-de-sac on West Arbor Avenue. "It's seven feet wide and four feet deep. They won't deliver mail because of the snow."
Residents are responsible for the snow on their sidewalks and for 15 feet on both sides of streetside mailboxes, even if the mailbox is on the street, said Dixie Bentley, officer-in-charge at the post office. That means clearing away the snow pushed up against the curb by the snowplows; if a delivery person can't reach it, service will be delayed.
Residents receive notice of the unsafe path and must clear it out before delivery will be reinstated; after three days of noncompliance, mail will be held at the post office for residents to pick up.
But Kubisiak is still frustrated.
"The snow that's in there didn't fall,"Kubisiak said of the path in front of his street-side mailbox."It was pushed in there and plowed in there by the city plow. They tell me it's my responsibility to get rid of it. Where do I put it?"
It could just get worse with the forecast for today. Patrick Ayd with the Bismarck office of the National Weather Service said the area could receive 5 to 8 inches of snowfall over Thursday night and into this afternoon. And high winds means visibility could be reduced to less than a half a mile at some points in the afternoon.
Wind chills could drop to about 20 and 25 below, too, Ayd said, and some areas in the southwest may receive some freezing rain.
The forecast has city crews prepping to work 12-hour shifts to clear the roads, but there's not many places snow can be pushed other than near driveways and up against the curbs.
"If we get eight inches,"said Rod Kudrna, an operator with Bismarck roads department, "a lot of snow is still going to go in the driveways."
Kudrna said they were still working 20-hour days even before today, trying to clear the streets and get areas cleaned up.They had moved into the downtown area and were cleaning up the college streets; cleared snow is trucked to four dump sites around the city, Kudrna said.
Kudrna added that the snow gates are the reasons why they can't plow close to the curbs, adding that they had received a lot of calls about problems with mailboxes.
"We do try to help them as much as we can, but we can't get every mailbox in town,"he said. "It's a tough responsibility for both homeowners and us to work on this problem."

I talked to my brother in MN about it and he said that in his town they bring inmates from the county jail and go around town and dig out all the hydrants. A pretty good idea I think. I just wonder how many hydrants around town are completely buried.
As for my neighbors, rest easy. "

I agree they need to tow all cars left on the street. Better yet, I say let the plow take them as they go. It's easier for the crew to follow a straight path.
I don't know what public school is by St Anne, but the parents are the issues; not the snow. Yes, the lanes are smaller, but it appears common sense shrinks as the path decreases. "

Here we go again. Just because people don't like the way the snow has or has not been moved does not mean we should move out of state. This is a legitimate complaint and is actually a hazard to driving. My street has been reduced to 1 lane driving in some spots because of the high snow banks and the occasional person that leaves their vehicle on the street, thus causing excess snow on the street. This is nonsense, especially if you have a driveway to put it in. I think these vehicles should be towed. "

I live 10 miles north of town. Other than a few spots where the drifts were so high on either side of the road, we had no problem getting into town. Taking my kids to daycare in town, we had no problem. My dad called from out of town at 8:49am and I told him it was fine in town. Nothing much, I would have been pretty upset if I had to take a day from work, because they called off school and the day was like it was.
I also want to say Thank you to all the crews that have been working on keeping the roads clear. Sure we may not be happy with where all the piles have ended up, but sometimes we just have to deal. "

Shovel it or blow it wrote on Jan 10, 2009 11:13 PM:
PROBLEM with this is the careless person backing out of the driveway.
SO when summer finally comes and this white stuff is all gone, have the post office come out and move those centralized boxes to either side of your driveway or move your single curbside mailbox to the same location to save an additional 15 foot of shoveling/blowing. WE all love to shovel out the driveway, who likes shoveling out the mailbox. MOVING it will make it easier on everyone, including the letter carrier.
I would highly recommend you contact your local postoffice prior to moving your mailbox. Better yet, cut through the political crap. Who knows better at where your mailbox is best placed than your local REGULAR letter carrier. Speak with them to help save yourself a little low back pain. I'm sure they would like to help solve part of this problem.
Another advantage of placing the mailbox near a driveway is the city worker can keep that snowgate down just a tad longer or drop it a tad sooner and help both the property owner and lettercarrier out. "

I've been thinking exactly that, but you said it best. Thanks for saying what had to be said. Thanks to all our city, county and state workers working around the clock to keep this under control. You are appreciated. You will get us through this winter then focus your efforts on all the potholes the spring thaw will bring. It doesn't end, but please know that there are many people out here that appreciate what you do. "
