Officials from the North Dakota Veterans Home are seeking an additional $13.3 million in state and federal funds to complete its new building in Lisbon after its design was changed last year.

Mark Johnson, the administrator of the veterans' home, told the Senate Appropriations Committee today that a construction bid completed in October 2008 showed the total cost for the building to be $27 million, up from the original $21 million.

The changes to the building stem from the Veterans Administration in Washington, which urged the North Dakota Veterans Home to adopt a "greenhouse" concept that houses veterans in single rooms.

The appropriation must be passed before March 1 in order to obtain a federal match for the building, Johnson said.
