Bismarck is seeking input about its electronic sign ordinance during a public input meeting set from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Tom Baker Room of the City/County Building.

The meeting will consist of an open house format, with staff available to answer questions and provide additional information about the ordinance.

There will be a brief presentation on the content of the ordinance at 2:30 p.m.

According to City Planning Manager Kim Lee, although there are many electronic signs within Bismarck, the city does not have an ordinance that addresses the location, size or operation of these types of signs.

In July, the Bismarck City Commission placed a moratorium on all new electronic moving image signs and digital billboards for six months, in order to allow adequate time to develop the new sign ordinance.

Lee said the city staff has been working with representatives from the sign industry on the ordinance's development.

" Some are complaining about the digital signage, and some complained about the lights on the Memorial Bridge. How about turning off all electricity at 10:00 pm, roll up the sidewalks and mandate a 10:00 pm curfew. Just wait til some of these people see Las Vegas!!!!! "

" Intelleigent, or stupid, you call it what you want, the sign people love digital signs, they are money makers, I bet they will choose no digital signs and just go back to hand painted earth tones that blend in with the asphault and stucco. "

" I think it is great to have rules/policies/procedures in place. However, I do hope that the city was intelligent enough to get a few sign people involved who know what they are doing and want to follow the rules as the city sets them. I don't have an issue with signs, it is a form of advertising and necessary for all business. "

" Thanks you City of Bismarck for doing something about the flashing bright signs. I am to keep my eyes on the road and all the other drivers so I do not have the time to read signs. Actually the flashing signs are very distracting and annoying while driving. "
