10 years ago (1998): Lisa Maus poured in 25 points to lead the University of Mary to a 74-72 win over Western Montana in women's basketball action.
Maus made nine of 14 floor shots and six of nine free throws. Erin Giese added 21 points for the Marauders, who overcame a 39-28 halftime deficit.
20 years ago (1988): Miss Basketball Nadine Schmidt of Braddock dazzled the state Class B girls basketball tournament crowd, smashed three state tournament scoring records and led her tiny town to its first state championship.
Naturally, Schmidt was rewarded by earning unanimous approval as a first-team pick on this year's Class B all-state girls basketball team, as selected by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
Schmidt, who finished with 2,457 career points, was a second-team pick as a sophomore. She earned first-team honors as a sophomore and as a junior.
Miss Basketball finalists Lynae Wagner of Max and Denise Kitsch of Starkweather also were unanimous picks for the first team. Barb Schmidt of state runner-up Montpelier and Jodi Landsiedel of Washburn rounded out the first team.
50 years ago (1958): Dick Schaefer netted 18 points and Tom Hall contributed 15 points and 21 rebounds to lead St. Mary's to a 48-43 win over Minot Ryan.
It was the Saints' second win in as many nights. St. Mary's downed St. Mary's of New England 54-38 in its season opener. Dave Rohan tossed in a game-high 24 points in that one.
