At least one North Dakota turkey can breathe a sigh of relief this Thanksgiving.

"Tom Turkey" got an official pardon from Gov. John Hoeven during a ceremony in the state Capitol on Tuesday.

"Now if he goes across state lines," Hoeven said, "the pardon is only good in North Dakota."

"Tom" is 6 months old and weighs about 50 pounds, said Dave Muehler of the North Dakota Turkey Federation.

Wyatt Wittenburg, 10, presented representatives from the Ruth Meiers Hospitality House and the Abused Adult Resource Center with turkeys -- the edible type -- during the ceremony.

The turkey federation will donate 10 turkeys to both Bismarck-area homeless shelters.

" To 'South Central Conservative' who wrote - "I know of over 200 $20+ an hour jobs available TODAY in a central ND town."

Perhaps you would do your fellow citizens a service and post what community you are refering to. i hear from people every day that have been or are about to get laid off and they could sure use the information. "

How do you think your turkey ends up on your table without you butchering it? "

" South Central Conservative: In the last 6 weeks there have been over 3000 job layoffs announced in ND, not including the 165 announced today by Cirrus. The North Dakota Department of Human Services announced that families needing food stamps increased by 5% in the month of October alone. My ax to grind with the Govern is simply this: do more Governor for the needy citizens of this state than for your friends. The oil fields are booming, but other than that, the rural towns are dying. Governor Hoeven has pretty mush abandoned rural ND. I understand why though: Grand Forks, Fargo, Bismarck, Minot and Williston account for almost 75% of the population of ND, so what does he need the rural communities for? We don't have large numbers of voters, so who cares, right? I am watching my neighbors file for fuel assistance in record numbers, and the population continues to decline. Although we do have quite a few minimum wage jobs available for those who can't leave. Some of us are fortunate South Central, but for many in the rural sections of the state, the future is very dim. So spare me your chants of Hoeven and the fantasic state of the ND economy. "

" Economic Conservative: Are you living in la-la land??? I just resigned my position and had 9 requests for my resume in 6 days. I have had 4 job interviews and have 2 very strong business opportunities to seriously consider. Also, I know of over 200 $20+ an hour jobs available TODAY in a central ND town. Are you kidding me??? Even the housing market in my county has GROWN by almost 10% in valuation this year, ALL during the recent housing problems. We even have a few NEW homes being bulit, and, I got a home equity loan in less than 30 days. I realize you have an axe to grind with the governor, and that's fine. But please, sir/maam, use soem good judgement in picking the fights. "

" The donation of these turkeys is truly a blessing for the homeless of Bismarck. Kudos to the North Dakota Turkey Federation for this charitable act. While I applaud the Federation, I can't help but notice that Hoeven didn't miss this photo op and continues to remain silent on the economic downturn ND has taken. "
