10 years ago (1998):Seth Helgeson makes up the entire short list.

Helgeson, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound senior defensive end from Bismarck High, is the lone repeat member of the coaches All-West Region football team.

The team includes four two-way first-team players - Derek Lorenz (tight end-defensive end) of Minot, Bryan Erstad (running back-linebacker) and Derek Schatz (wide-receiver-kick returner) of Jamestown, and Jeff Schmidt (placekicker-punter) of St. Mary's. Schatz picked up a third honor as a second-team defensive back.

Jamestown dominated the offensive unit with six selections. The Blue Jays also put two defensive players and a specialist on the first team to lead the way with nine honorees.

20 years ago (1988): It took three overtimes before Steele-Dawson got past Wing-Tuttle 55-54 in the semifinals of the District 17 girls basketball tournament in Mandan.

In the other semifinal, Shiloh Christian downed Driscoll 67-47.

Holly Hochhalter scored 26 points for the Pirates, and Des Bourgois led Wing-Tuttle with 21.

Jennifer Barnhardt paced Shiloh with 21, and Shannon Ziegler and Adrienne Saitfors added 16 and 10, respectively.

50 years ago (1958): The Bismarck Demons knocked on the door last year for the North Dakota East-West High School Conference football championship, but it was closed to them by the Fargo Midgets.

Now, the Bismarck team - Western Division champions for the second year in a row - is planning to push its way in at the expense of another Fargo squad, this time the Fargo Shanley Deacons.

The Bismarck coaches and players ponder Shanley's impressive 9-0 record, and the fact that Shanley is unbeaten in its last 11 starts, and are not inclined to take its task against the Deacons lightly.

"We're aware they're going to be tough," Bismarck coach Woody Wilson said. "They've obviously got a real rough defense. They only common foe we have to go by is Mandan (beaten 19-0 by Shanley, tied 0-0 by Bismarck), although that was the first game for each team. And they've got a good ball carrrier in this (Steve) Duginski."
