Putting the ball in the net hasn't been a problem for the U-Mary women's soccer team lately. The Marauders (3-0-0 Northern Sun, 3-6-0 overall) have outscored their opponents 11-3 in their last three matches all victories.
Eight different players have scored goals this season. Jessica Janusz, Amy Tanaka and Alyssa Deutscher have all scored three goals apiece.
Janusz leads the Marauders in assists and points with five and 11, respectively.
Marauders coach Levi Evans likes the fact that a lot of different players have been able to score.
"Part of it is our style of play and what we're trying to do,"Evans said. "Megan Wilson was our leading scorer last year, and she certainly isn't a secret. People are taking advantage of the opportunities they are given. It's being distributed across the board."
Evans does have an issue with some of the goals his team has been giving up, especially ones late in the match.
"I coach defense and want shutouts,"Evans said. "It's the time we give up goals. You don't want to be giving up goals with two minutes left in the game. We have to finish the game."
U-Mary hosts MSU-Mankato on Saturday and Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday.
MSU-M a team U-Mary has never played before is ranked No. 21 in the latest national poll.
"Mankato State is legit,"Evans said. "It's nothing we haven't seen based on the schedule we're playing. I'm glad we have Mankato at home."
Volleyball team hoping
to chalk up more wins
U-Mary coach Heidi Sunderland sees some light at the end of the tunnel.
Sunderland knows there's no cupcake matches on her schedule, but she believes the Marauders (3-15) could possibly chalk up a few more wins to end the season.
Of the 14 matches remaining, six are against teams with a record worse than .500. Two are against a team at .500.
"The first part of the season we weren't getting those matches, and it was hard," Sunderland said. "We will be playing teams that are like us in the sense that they aren't national powerhouses."
The Marauders have three ranked teams remaining on their schedule No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul, No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State and No. 13 Minnesota-Duluth.
U-Mary has been swept in seven of its last eight matches. Sandwiched in there is an upset victory over Wayne State.
The Marauders travel to Upper Iowa (8-8) Friday and Winona State (5-10) Saturday.
