The Dickinson-based Dakota Resource Council is withdrawing from a federal lawsuit over the TransCanada Keystone Pipeline.

DRC Board Chairman Roger Brenna says his group will keep its focus local by closely monitoring the pipeline construction.

The Natural Resources Defense Council says it will carry on the case, which challenges the U.S. State Department's environmental review of the pipeline.

The pipeline is being built to carry crude oil from the tar sands of northern Alberta to Midwest refineries, starting next year. Its route goes through eight eastern North Dakota counties.

The council says a South Dakota group, Dakota Rural Action, also has withdrawn from the federal case and both state groups will find ways to challenge the pipeline in their home states.
