"Chemistry guru" Robert D. Becker comes to Bismarck's Gateway to Science as part of the Visiting Scientists Series in early October.Becker will present a "Chemistry Demonstration Extravaganza" at 1 and 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, in the Sidney J. Lee Auditorium at Bismarck State College. Both demonstrations are free and open to the public.
Gateway to Science will also host a student/teacher workshop of hands-on chemistry fun for grades 3-6 on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, in the Frances Leach High Prairie Arts & Science complex, 1810 Schafer St. Registration is required, and a $5 materials fee may be paid at the door. Becker is an American Chemical Society national award winner for high school teaching. A graduate of Yale and Washington University (St. Louis), he is currently a high school teacher in St. Louis, Mo. He is a well-known demonstrator, having conducted more than 100 demonstration workshops. His chemical demonstrations (known as "Becker Demos") are being used worldwide. He is the author of two books of chemical demonstrations, "Twenty Demonstrations Guaranteed to Knock Your Socks Off," Volumes I and II.
Becker's presentations are sponsored by the Visiting Scientists Series, which includes representatives from Bismarck State College, Bismarck Schools District, Gateway to Science, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and ND Society of Professional Engineers, Chapter 3.
