Trivia answer

From 1D: Four relief pitchers have won the American League Cy Young award:Dennis Eckersley (Oakland, 1992), Willie Hernandez (Detroit, 1984), Rollie Fingers (Milwaukee, 1981) and Sparky Lyle (New York Yankees, 1977).

10 years ago (1998):Joel Jahnke's scoring explosion continued with three goals as the Bismarck Demons boys soccer team won a West Region match against Minot.

Jahnke, who scored three goals for the second straight game, netted the first two as Bismarck never looked back.

Jermey Johannes and Garrett Ludwig scored the other Demon goals. Tre White, Terrance Wolbaum, Todd Huber, Joel Roloff, Wade Mathern, Jay Visger, Dave Cook and Johannes each tallied one assist.

Jarred Roloff made four saves for Bismarck.

20 years ago (1988): Practice makes perfect for the Carlson brothers. Those who were at Hughes Field certainly would agree with that.

Chris and Kyle Carlson combined for 250 yards rushing, including a razzle-dazzle 80-yard scoring play, to lead Dickinson to a convincing 41-22 victory over Bismarck High in Western Dakota Association football.

Kyle Carlson scored three touchdowns and Chris Carlson added one, while Brian Stockert scored on a 27-yard pass from Chris Carlson. Troy Stone finished off the Midgets scoring with a 27-yard interception return. Jason Homiston kicked three extra points.

For the Demons, Shawn Perius scored on a 1-yard run and threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Zander. Jason Frey scored on an 87-yard kickoff return for Bismarck's other touchdown. Jeff Holly kicked two extra points.

50 years ago (1958): St. Mary's Central Saints and the Mandan Braves each get their first conference test of the year when they clash head-on.

Both Dave O'Brien, St. Mary's coach, and Connie Juelke, Mandan mentor, expect a tussle before the final whistle sounds.

The Saints may be hampered by more than a lack of experience for the encounter.

First-string halfbacks Dick Schaefer and Jerry Jochim are on the injured list and O'Brien says as of right now each must be listed as a doubtful starter.

Juelke was pleased with the play of Pat Johner, sophomore quarterback. The Braves concentrate on a ground game, with fullback Bill Ellison doing the brunt of the ball carrying.
