10 years ago (1998): DICKINSON — Dickinson State made enough mistakes to last a season. Black Hills State made even more.
The result was a 30-19 Blue Hawk victory over the Yellow Jackets in a nonconference football game.
“I bet both teams had more penalties and more turnovers in this game than they had in the previous five years total,” DSU coach Hank Biesiot said.
Malachi Nelson rushed for three touchdowns for Dickinson State. He scored from 3, 46 and 31 yards out and ended up with 174 yards total.
Tony Deimling scored on a 6-yard run, while Tyson Niewoehner kicked four extra points. Deimling finished with 72 yards rushing.
20 years ago (1988): The expectations for the Century girls basketball team may be on the rise.
“A lot of people were unsure about us, but I’m sure we’ll improve some more and I’m really excited about it,” said Kaja VanHorn, a 5-foot-7 junior reserve who played a key role in Century’s 49-44 victory over St. Mary’s in a Western Dakota Association game.
VanHorn and Monica Hoghaug were both effective in relief, especially when foul difficulties put team leaders Emily Wetzel and Linda Davis on the bench for extended periods.
Davis still led the Patriots with 10 points, while Jen Theel, VanHorn and Kelly Olmsted chipped in eight each.
Theresa Berger scored a game-high 22 for the Saints, while Tami Valeu added eight.
50 years ago (1958): North Dakota High School gridders greeted the first big weekend of football with a total of eight contests involving Class A teams and nonconference or interdivisional foes.
Mandan belted Oakes 32-0, while Williston shut out Sydney, Mont.
The Braves did all their scoring in the first and last periods.
Bill Ellison raced for two touchdowns, one a 74-yard dash.
Ralph Klug also scored twice for Mandan.
Gregg Childs scored on a pass interception, while Pat Johner and Tom Kautzmann added a point apiece.
Ronnie Erdmann took the opening kickoff on his own 10-yard line for a quick touchdown that started Williston off to a win. It was the first shutout in a series dating back to 1951.
