The collective memory of the North Dakota National Guard is a little younger.Col. Gerald Heinle, a decorated Vietnam veteran, retired.
"I've really, truly enjoyed my time in the Guard," Heinle said in a release. "I am the last Vietnam pilot to serve in the North Dakota Army Guard, and when Iretire, it will be an end of an era."
He enlisted in the Army in 1969 and flew with the 135th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam, logging more than 1,000 hours. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with a V for valor.
After two and half years, he was put on a wait list for the National Guard and went to work full time in 1976.
He commanded the 142nd Medical Detachment Air Ambulance and 1-112th Aviation Battalion. He was North Dakota Aviation Officer in 2001.
"He has been a top-notch Soldier since the day he enlisted in the military; piloting helicopters during intense combat missions, rising through the ranks of the North Dakota National Guard and serving in many key assignments," said Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk. "His experience in aviation has benefited all of us."
