The Governor's Prevention Advisory Council on Drugs and Alcohol has awarded grants to five organizations to help decrease substance abuse among the youth of North Dakota.

The council was created during the 2007 legislative session.

Organizations receiving grant awards from the council are: Northern Lights Youth Services Inc., Hillsboro; West Dakota Parent and Family Resource Center, Dickinson; United Tribes Technical College, Bismarck; Casselton Youth Task Force, Casselton; Sunrise Youth Bureau, Dickinson.

The organizations will utilize educational prevention activities within schools and communities for the purpose of promoting healthy prevention methods among schoolchildren. The programs will target elementary and middle school-aged youth and their parents.

" I believe that any program needs to delve into the emotional decision making that an individual makes. Pressure from peers is the deciding factor. One needs to learn about individual choice without feeling guilty, embarassed and the need to fit in. I believe this should start at the early age of childhood. Of course other factors play a part in alcohol/drug abuse. It's great to know that these organizations acknowledge the need for this type of awareness. I also think about how are these organizations are going to use these grants. Is anyone allowed to link into a web site to educate themselves on the useage of these? "

" Dear writer of this article, please tell us why this is necessary and how the prevention will be managed. The target is elementary and middle school-aged youth plus parent, according to your release. Why are the older teens and their parents ignored? It appears that only large organizations, like Youth Services Inc, Resource Center, College and Task Force, oh, and Bureaus are available to meet this effort of prevention.
Can anyone tell me why?
Thanks. "
