Trivia answer

From 1D: Fifty-seven years ago today, Eddie Gaedel, a 65-pound, 3-foot-7 little person, made his first and only plate appearance as a pinch-hitter for Frank Saucier of the St. Louis Browns. Gaedel, wearing No. 1/8, walked on four pitches by Detroit Tigers pitcher Bob Cain and was taken out for pinch-runner Jim Delsing. The gimmick by Browns owner Bill Veeck was completely legal, but later outlawed.

10 years ago (1998):Ask University of Mary football coach Dale Lennon to list his three biggest concerns heading into his second season as Marauders coach and he has no trouble drumming up an answer.

"Offensive line ... offensive line ... offensive line," he said.

Lennon lost all five starting linemen following a 4-6 season, the Marauders' first losing season sing going 4-5 in 1990.

Three freshmen - Luke Spenger of Elgin; Nolan Canright and Andy Nelson - are expected to make competition for starting positions fierce. Spenger is 6-foot-6 and 290 pounds.

They will push the five players Lennon identified as players most likely to start, if the season began today: Senior Brandon Deckard; sophomore Will Albrecht; junior Eric Volk of Granville; sophomore Shawn Levesque and redshirt freshman Brian Fettig of Bismarck.

Fettig is 6-4 and 265 pounds. Volk started off and on for North Dakota State before transferring to U-Mary. Deckard started three games last season for the Marauders.

20 years ago (1988): As a high school junior - Grade 11, as they say in Canada - Emily Wetzel knew she was heading for the U.S. as an exchange student for her senior year .. er, Grade 12.

However, the destination for her last year of high school wasn't finalized. Oregon seemed to be a good bet. In fact, an Oregon high school coach made the initial contact but it didn't sound like the right move for theWetzel family.

"I was hauled out of class one day by the principal and I thought I was in trouble," said Wetzel. "But it was a coach from Oregon who called and was interested in me playing there. My mom didn't think much of it."

So she instead picked Bismarck as her home for one year and the beneficiary of her choice is the Century girls basketball team. That's good fortune for coach Dennis Jacobs.

50 years ago (1958): JAMESTOWN - Jamestown High School opened football practice with one of the gloomiest outlooks in years.

Although some 60 potential gridders reported for the first-day drills, the lot includes only six lettermen, of which only one has seen duty as a regular.

Heading the list of returning lettermen is co-captain Chuck Deery. The guard is the only Blue Jay with considerable game experience.

Other returners are co-captain and end Billy Gussner, center Clayton Brown, guard Bob Dugan, fullback Bart Holaday and halfback Kent Johnson.

Coach Ernie Gates will be forced to rely on juniors to fill the big gaps left by graduation.
