BEIJING- Former Dickinson State University sprinter Derrick Atkins' dream of winning an Olympic medal came to an end Saturday when he failed to qualify for the men's 100-meter final.The 24-year-old Atkins, who was representing the Bahamas, placed sixth in his semifinal heat in a time of 10.13. The top four runners from each heat qualified for the finals, and Atkins fell .12 seconds short of Jamaica's Michael Frater for the fourth spot.
Atkins, who won a silver medal in the 100 at the 2007 world championships in Osaka, Japan, was a seven-time NAIAnational champion at Dickinson State. He helped the Blue Hawks win national team titles in 2004 and 2005.
