Be proud of North Dakota beef

This is in response to the Bismarck Tribune article from Aug. 3, "Meat plant set to close."

The article states:"Burleigh County ranchers Alvin and Juanita Braun started the plant to provide beef for their North Dakota Branded Beef store in Bismarck. Juanita Braun said when they opened their beef store, the only way to get meat that was processed in North Dakota was to do it themselves."

She said there's just too much to do when it comes to operating a farm, running a retail store and owning a meat processing plant. "When it comes down to it, it's a personal decision," she said.

They did all this by themselves. And when they started the meat processing plant, they were the only North Dakota meat processing plant and now they have to compete with two corporate North Dakota meat processing plants. Are we North Dakota people going to let two corporate meat processing plants put a North Dakota family-owned meat processing plant that created 22 jobs out of business? They also sell some other North Dakota products in their store, which helps those manufacturers, too.

About 15 years ago, I asked our state officials to create a state marketing system for our state manufacturers. Even though the North Dakota State Mill andElevator already has a marketing system, everything fell on deaf ears. Our officials are working for the big corporations, that's where the money is.

We have bought North Dakota Branded Beef products and were proud enough to use some of the products for gifts. I hope more people will do the same thing.Using their products for gifts is a good way of advertising for them. They also ship products.

" I import my steaks from another state, I found Iowa Fairway stores have a better selection of cuts then North Dakota does. "

" Plant based.....don't cows eat plants? So, in a way, I'm eating plant based food. Cows eat plants and turn it into something we eat. I think that counts.

" Meat - was that meant to be taken seriously? Holy cow. You go ahead and eat your plants and leave the meat for the rest of us. "

" To meat, Vegatables give me gas. Meat doesn't. So I am protecting the planet by eating a food that does not give me gas, plus eliminates a methane producer, the cow. If you want to eliminate poisonous gases that my create global warming, shut your trap and keep all that hot air to yourselve. "

" Don't just blame the governor. It is all of us who would rather shop at a big box location for everything rather than supporting local business. Now if prices locally are dramatically higher, than I could understand it. However, spending a little extra for locally owned products benefits all of us in the long run. For those of you who think big box retailers will keep prices low if they have no competition, think again. In regards to this local company, they obviously had no problems with the local store, just the processing plant. For those vegans out their, don't eat meat. I love to eat good meat, especially beef, as long as it is processed in a humane way. "

" I have patronizing and giving gift boxes of N.D. beef to my friends from the North Dakota Branded Beef store for a number of years. Their products are outstanding, and I love the taste of beef that has no chemicals, antibiotics or other synthetic additives added to their beef products. I wish the Braun family well in this N.D. Beef endeavor. I hope they can expand and increase their business in the near future. "

" You're right Martin!!

To meat, plant based foods use plenty of water and chemicals, both in pesticides and fertilizer that are polluting our air and water so what is your one sided point?

I would sure rather buy my beef from a source that I know and trust. Thank you Braun family.

I have said it before on these forums, the Gov and his staff have always gone for the big box corporate homeruns that are an economic vacuum for our rural areas, only to make the Gov's numbers look good.

North Dakota government has made up their mind that rural towns along with their schools, churches, and grocery stores are going to die no matter what. This is the reason for the complacency the Gov. has towards rural ND. No leadership, just the easy path to make him look good. "

" "Meat"....you missed the point of the whole editorial, and it surprises me that with that kind of platform that you live in ND let alone read the Tribune. For your sake I hope that cattle producers of our great state don't find out who you are! "

" martin, meat is an unhealthy food, eat plant based food for your protein, also meat production creates methane gas which also creates global warming. Also, it takes way to much water to produce meat. "
