 Change?

Lately, I've been noticing a turn in the Obama campaign that has not been reported all that much in the news. I noticed his position on change has turned into a position of the same thing, nation-building, maintaining the course, no troop withdrawal, and being a typical arrogant D.C. politician.

Obama has made countless statements of change from the Bush administration, but his actions recently are speaking louder than his words. First, he wants to nation-build in Afghanistan, which sounds to me like President Bush's plan for Iraq that Obama has ridiculed countless times. Rather than his promise of change, he plans to keep our troops in Iraq or ship them off to the nation-building he plans in Afghanistan. It's a little ironic that the change Obama promised has turned out to be like his new stance on the surge, leaning more towards McCain's policy.

Though he claims to be different than other politicians, since he's spent so little time in Washington, we can see from his inability to admit he was wrong when he said the surge would fail, he is just like the rest of the politicians. He will only acknowledge accomplishments and never apologize or take the blame for flawed beliefs and admit that his opposition was correct in their decisions.

Is this what we want as our commander in chief - a candidate who was wrong about an important wartime decision with the surge, who is not humble enough to admit failure, who wants to continue if not increase our presence in the Middle East, a candidate whose only change to our country will be higher taxes?

I know I'm ready for a change, but I don't see it happening, even from Obama's campaign filled with empty promises of hope and change.

Nice try, but that just proves that you like to put your own spin on things and try to sell it as fact. Most of us are smart enough to know that already. "

" Well, well, well, look at what we have here from the Washington Times dated August 7, 2008: [Obama aide tied to extremists] "America's largest Islamic civil liberties group on Wednesday defended Sen. Barack Obama after the Democratic presidential candidate's Muslim-outreach coordinator resigned because of a brief association with a suspected Muslim extremist. The Muslim group's defense came two days after Chicago lawyer Mazen Asbahi, who was appointed national coordinator for Muslim-American affairs by the Obama campaign on July 26, stepped down. Questions had arisen about Mr. Asbahi's connection to Jamal Said, the imam at an Islamic fundamentalist-controlled mosque in Illinois. In 2000, Mr. Asbahi served with Mr. Said on the board of Allied Assets Advisors Fund, a Delaware-registered trust. The Justice Department had named Mr. Said an "unindicted co-conspirator" in the racketeering trial last year of several people accused of fundraising for Hamas, a Palestinian Islamic terrorist organization created by the Gaza wing of the Muslim Brotherhood. The proceedings ended in a mistrial. Mr. Asbahi is also a regular speaker before several U.S. groups that scholars associate with the Muslim Brotherhood. The Obama campaign did not address the allegations."

I have warned many of you bloggers recently about Barack Hussein Obama and now here is more evidence about his true character and intentions. Now is time for you Obama lovers to wise up and quit licking his boots!!! "

" This might be the most pertinent question we should all be asking ourselves.
You can debate what's fair or not fair in terms of taxes all day long. But at the end of the day there can't be much dispute that Obama is proposing significant tax hikes on Americans.
Sure, there are some folks at the lower end of the income tax brackets who will see their income taxes go down. Sure. That's great. I am all in favor of people's taxes going down. For sure.
But at the higher range of the tax brackets people are going to see their taxes go up significantly.
This will hurt the economy. These folks will have less to invest, less to spend, consumer spending will decline, and I believe our economy will suffer as a result.
But perhaps the most startling of Obama's plans involves significantly ratcheting up the tax on employers--the FICA tax. Right now employers pay 6.2% on all wages up to $102,000. Obama proposes repealing this cap. This will cause tax costs to increase significantly. If labor costs more, employers won't be able to afford as much of it and will fire people.
Sure, Obama, if elected, will do some good things. No doubt. Just as McCain, if elected, will do some good things. Both will probably do some things we all disagree with as well.
But I am voting with my pocketbook and based on who I believe will hurt the economy least.
I believe that is McCain. "

The thing to keep in perspective is that we are all Americans and regardless of how the election chips fall in November, we will have a new President next year and he will have task of getting this nation back on track toward increased domestic security and improved international respect.

We're all in this boat together. Let's all just pause for a minute or two and try to remember while that attacking the intelligence or character of those who have a slightly different viewpoint than we do might make us feel better. It accomplishes nothing beyond serving to create greater polarity between us all. Hey, I enjoy a spirited debate as much as anyone and I love the fact that I live in a country that allows me to express my views openly. That's something we should all appreciate.

Why don't we all pause for a moment and take a slow, deep breath. If you look at our domestic politics from a global perspective, the political scope runs far to the extreme of the vast majority of the American people, where over 90 percent of us are just a few degrees either right or left of center. We have things pretty good here and we all know it. But it's election season so the hyperbole is going to heat up just like it always does. Democrats aren't Communists/Socialists and Republicans arent Nazis/Fascists. We all want the best for our kids & our national security. We just disagree on how best to get there. That's why we have elections. See you at the polls. "

If someone says they are going to raise taxes on only those wealthy people hang on to your wallets. First it was 250k and up now it is 200k and up by election time $40000 and up(which isn't much) will be looking pretty inviting. The national debt under Reagan was the highest in history (at that time) and the pundents said that was why interest was at an all time high. Looking at todays situation-I guess they were wrong. Their protests tell you it is more important for the person who has been shorting financials over the past 18 months with a few mouse clicks a week to get the lower rate, than to ease the burden on those who punch clocks and work for tips every day. $400 billion and counting for Iraq, $350 billion to the banks through the Fed in exchange for worthless mortgages, a blank check worth up to $800 billion to Freddie and Fannie, $120 billion per year for ten years for prescription drug benefits. Oppose it and you qualify, Don't oppose it and you don't qualify.

Then to justify your presumed authority you came up with "read the bible." Since you think that will clarify everything, I read a little bit, and before long guess what I discovered.

Genesis Chapter 2 verse 7: And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

The way I interpret this passage, the bible defines life as beginning when a person takes their first breath, not at the moment of conception. Which makes me wonder...How do you feel about Capital punishment? I think it's safe to say that Jesus might have a problem with giving the government the right to take a human life(i.e. living soul). It seems to me that being for capital punishment is even more of a disqualifier. Don't you? "

McCain is most likely still in favor of abortion, but knows his needs the votes of people such as yourself to get elected. Look at what has happened to our nation under eight years of Republican rule. Is this really the world you would like to leave to the youth of our nation? If so then vote for McCain because of his supposed "opposition" to abortion. "

If you continue to tax and take money from the rich and give it to the poor, all it will do is diminish the middle class even more. It gives incentive for people to continue to not work and live off of the government which this country doesn't need more of. Next, socialized healthcare. I would rather pay for health insurance and get good care than wait months to see a doctor. Obama is definately a good speaker, but once all the smooth talking is over I don't believe he will do what is good for the country. I don't understand how anyone can feel that someone is ready to run our country when half of the time they have held political office has been spent running around campaigning for presidency. "

Ok, so you don't like the ex-minister of his church. Do you think you are the arbiter of who is and is not a Christian?

Iraq also contains 110 trillion (with a T) cubic feet of natural gas, and is a focal point for regional and international security issues." To minimalize the importance of the original judgment call to commit out troops to invade, overthrow and occupy a sovereign nation that had not attacked us based on either faulty or possibly falsified intelligence is at best obtuse.
Judgment, judgment, judgment. What we need now is clear minded judgment and an exit strategy from this ongoing national nightmare.

This debacle has cost us billions and will continure to do so for years to come!

It seems to me that Obamma has the duty to change his views concerning this war and and work closly with the generals in charge especially where troop-levels are concerned. I see nothing wrong with him admitting that he may have been wrong with his initial troop withdrawl plan. If President Bush would have been more flexible in his thinking, this war may have been over by now.

Mr. Tigglaar is correct when he states that taxes will increase, they have to! What he failed to mention is that citizens making $200,000.00 or more will pay more which seems fair to me.

Some are Sunni some are Kurdish and by far the majority are Shea. These 3 Muslim sects have been at holy war for centuries. Iraq sits next to Iran, a nation governed by a Shiite theocracy. McCain supported this invasion and occupation from the very beginning, in fact he was one of those who claimed that this entire operation would be quick and virtually cost free since the grateful people would pick-up the tab with their huge oil revenues. Senator Obama on the other hand voted against this adventure from the beginning, saying that this was the wrong war saying, and I quote:
("This was a conceptually flawed mission, from the start? We need better judgment when we decide to send our young men and women into war, that we are making absolutely certain that it is because there is an imminent threat, that American interests are going to be protected, that we have a plan to succeed and to exit, that we are going to train our troops properly and equip them properly and put them on proper rotations and treat them properly when they come home"). By the way, does anyone think that when Jesus comes back he want to see his believers wearing crosses? Wouldn't that be like walking up to Caroline Kennedy sporting a lapel pin of a high powered rifle, then saying, Just thinking about your dad? I think I heard that one on Comedy Central.

Consider yourself humored. Obama in 08. "

" Mom-of-teens, perhaps the fact that there was a recession in 2001 was due to failed economic policies of the Clinton Administration which were coming to full boar. Or perhaps from the single largest attack on American soil that struck deeply at the heart of America's financial apparatus. Bush was in office for less than a year when the recession began, Washington can't move nearly that fast for anything to happen that quickly. Further, economic policies take a while to actually have an impact. The recession was actually short lived, it could have been much worse. The economy came back, perhaps not the the 90's level, but that was not going to happen so soon after 9/11 with the threat of another terrorist attack looming. The fact that the economy did come back and we aren't in a terrible recession right now is a testament to President Bush's tax policies. "

" To Interesting Fact, A Yale college guide circa 1970 listed the average SAT for Yale freshmen as about 670 in verbal, 705 in math. So Bush with 566 verbal and 640 math was well below average for his class. He must have written an awesome essay.
If Bush had the slightest sense of irony, he might have paused to ask himself, "Wait a minute. How did I get into Yale?" It wasn't because of any academic achievement: his high school record was ordinary. It wasn't because of his life experience--prosperous family, fancy prep school--which was all too familiar at Yale. It wasn't his SAT scores.
They may not have had an explicit point system at Yale in 1964, but Bush clearly got in because of affirmative action. Affirmative action for the son and grandson of alumni. Affirmative action for a member of a politically influential family. Affirmative action for a boy from a fancy prep school. These forms of affirmative action still go on.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Harvard accepts 40% of applicants who are children of alumni but only 11% of applicants generally. And this kind of affirmative action makes the student body less diverse, not more so. George W. Bush, in fact, may be the most spectacular affirmative-action success story of all time. Until 1994, when he was 48 years old and got elected Governor of Texas, his life was almost empty of accomplishments.
Yet bloodlines and connections had put him into Andover, Yale and Harvard Business School, and even finally provided him with a fortune after years of business disappointments. Intelligence, hard work and the other qualities associated with the concept of merit had almost nothing to do with Bush's life and success up to that point.
And yet seven years later he was President of the U.S. clearly an indirect result of affirmative action. "

Had you done your research you would have known, without me telling you that when Senator Barack Obama became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, his campaign plane underwent a month long refurbishment to get it ready for the general election campaign, a process that included reconfiguring the interior seating of the Boeing 757-200ER passenger aircraft chartered from North American Airlines and modifying the exterior markings to identify the aircraft as Barack Obama's official campaign plane. The latter activity included replacing the North American Airline color scheme and markings with the Obama campaign slogan ("Change We Can Believe In"), the BARACKOBAMA.COM domain name and Obama's sunrise/flag "O" campaign logo.

The replacement of North American's commercial markings included the removal of two stylized U.S. flag images which are used in the airline's logo (A REGESTERED TRADEMARK OF THAT COMPANY), while the traditional depiction of the U.S. flag adjacent to the planes registration numbers was retained.

So as log as you are slinging mud at Obama for this, it might interest you to know that some other recent candidates have also modified their campaign planes with logos and campaign markings. For example, Bob Dole, George W. Bush & John Kerry, as well as another current presidential candidate John McCain's "Straight Talk Express" campaign plane.

The people of Europe do love him because they can see how much damage has been done to this country over the past 8 years and want it to end. If you plan to continue living here, why not learn to respect the process by which we select our leaders and stop sounding like a petulant child. "

What he did was to say that he allowed Matthews to phrase a question incorrectly and he didnt correct it when he answered. And yes like a fair minded person he apologized to OReilly for this oversight.

MATTHEWS: Did people say call Sean, call Bill, call whoever? Did you do that as a regular thing?

McCLELLAN: Certainly. Certainly. It wasnt necessarily something I was doing, but it was something that we at the White House, yes, were doing.

Then O'Reilly after calling McClellan a "liar" and an "idiot" on his radio show Monday, promised to have some fun with the former White House Press Secretary on his TV show that night, insisting that he, the great ratings king of the Fox News network, did not need talking points from the Bush White House.

OREILLY: Matthews played you. ... He played you! You should be mad at him!

McCLELLAN: So you dont owe me an apology for calling me a liar?

OREILLY: You are a liar! You said I received talking points and I didnt!

McCLELLAN: No I didnt! I was not confirming that. Im telling you right now
OREILLY: Oh youre parsing the damn thing! Come on, be honest! ... He baited you! He baited you! ... Youre crazy! Youre partners with [NBC] in selling your book!

McClellan, who claims in his book that he was misled by White House officials, conceded that he "messed up" by replying affirmatively to Matthews' question without rebutting the specific names Chris mentioned.
"I was specifically not trying to single anyone out, including you," said McClellan. "There were people, not you, but there were people." "

" Dewdrop, Why don't you try getting your information from a source other than Fox News? Here are the FACTS: At 7:42 a.m. ET on July 24, the German magazine Der Spiegel's online "Obama Live Ticker" reported that "Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate." According to Der Spiegel: "The visits were planned for Friday. 'Barack Obama will not be coming to us,' a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. 'I don't know why.' Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama." Accusations by conservative bloggers and Republican officials -- echoed in the media -- that Obama was "snubbing" wounded soldiers or that he placed greater importance on "working out" or "shopping" immediately followed the Der Spiegel report.

These allegations against Obama were almost immediately debunked. NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell, who accompanied Obama on his overseas trip, reported on the morning of July 25 that Obama met with wounded soldiers in Iraq "without photographers" and that the plan for the Landstuhl visit had been to "leave the press corps on the tarmac." Mitchell and others would revisit the allegation several times, each time declaring it to be "false" or without factual basis. Nevertheless, the claim that Obama canceled the Landstuhl visit because he could not bring the media along continued to drive media coverage.

According to the Obama campaign, the Pentagon had informed them that the visit "would be viewed ... as a campaign event," and "Senator Obama did not want to have a trip to see
our wounded warriors perceived as a campaign event."

Now Dewdrop, exactly who is a liar? "

VoR wrote on Aug 1, 2008 4:44 PM:

" Mike, Here's a bit of amazing trivia for this historic election: It's the first time two sitting senators will run against each other as their party's nominee for president. In fact, only two sitting senators have ever even been elected president--John F. Kennedy, ( a 1'st term senator) from Mass. who ran against then Vice-President Richard Nixon in 1960, and Warren G. Harding, an Ohio Republican who beat the Democratic governor from his home state to win the 1920 election.

It's easy to get elected from the Senate if you're only running against other senators; the task proves far more difficult if your opposition is a governor or an incumbent national office holder. In the last 30 years, only two sitting senators have received their party's nomination: Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., in 2004, and Sen. Robert Dole, R-Kan., in 1996. (Dole left the Senate mid-term to run for president.) Before that, you have to go back to the 1972 bid of Sen. George McGovern, D-S.D.

With six-year terms, senators have long histories of roll-call votes. They often appear to flip-flop on issues, or will vote against a slightly different version of a bill--remember John Kerry's claim about voting for war funding before he voted against it? Other times, a senator will vote for a bill simply because there is an amendment attached that would be favorable to his or her constituents.

This amounts to a field day for opposition research teams: Few things are easier to twist in a 30-second campaign spot than a Senate voting record. There is also one very dark fact about the two senators who have attained the presidency--each has died in his first term as president. Kennedy was assassinated before serving three full years in office. Harding was felled by a heart attack in 1923. "

" This discussion about Obama being a flip-flopper coming from the McCain camp seems a bit odd. John McCain (who I supported in 2000) was against the Bush tax cuts, now he wants to make them permanent. McCain was against offshore drilling, now he thinks we should start drilling ASAP. He was pro choice, now hes both for and against overturning Roe v. Wade. The old McCain didnt want an amendment and didnt want Roe overturned. The new McCain completely disagrees with the old McCain. In 1983 Sen. McCain voted against a Martin Luther King Holiday, In 1990, McCain persuaded Ronald Reagan to support an Arizona holiday for King.

According to a review by Gun Owners of America (GOA), "...in 2001, McCain went from being a supporter of anti-gun bills to being a lead sponsor". McCain's GOA rating is F-. He was strongly against torture of prisoners (an understandable position in his case). Now he says torture is justifiable. In May, when Pres. Bush likened Obamas willingness to open a dialogue with Iran to Disraelis appeasement of Adolf Hitler before WWII, McCain immediately jumped on and agreed with the comment. Now he supports the administrations "contacts" with Iran. McCain was anti-ethanol. Now hes pro-ethanol. McCain was both for and against state promotion of the Confederate flag.

McCain criticized Jerry Falwell (who said Americans deserved the 9/11 attacks) and Pat Robertson as agents of intolerance in 2002, but has since spoken at the graduation ceremony at Liberty University. He also sought out the endorsements of TV evangelists John Hagee (Who calls the Catholic Church The great prostitute and claims that Hurricane Katrina was sent by God to punish the gays in New Orleans) and Rod Parsley, who advocates a war with Islam. Now he has renounced their support.

Actually these flip-flopping charges are standard Republican tactics. But I recall hearing an old saying, something about people who live in glass houses. "

" Nice try.

"Nation Building" in Afghanistan?

Obama's stance on Afghanistan hasn't changed. If you had been paying any attention over the last 6 years you would know that Iraq was a needless distraction. The taliban and al qaeda are in Afghanistan. Bin Laden may still be there as well. Do I need to point out that al qaeda was responsible for 9-11? That the taliban harbored them? Sounds like I might. (You are aware that Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11, right?)

I'm sure there will be some here who will defend Mr. Tiggelaar's distortions. This tactic of twisting reality really insults the intelligence of the general public. It is heartening to know that a majority of people are not blindly listening to statements such as this and forming their own opinions. Pushing this type of distortion is disgraceful, insulting and unseemly. It also seems a bit desperate. "

" Tiggelaar spews forth a lot of baseless propaganda, most of which is the opposite of where Obama stands on the issues (keeping the troops in Iraq? nation building in Afghanistan? Where do these people come up with this garbage???). It really doesn't matter though, because this entire election hinges on one single thing: have people learned their lesson yet? Have people had enough Republican corruption and fascism? If so, Obama will be the next president. If they still haven't had enough, if the lesson has not yet been learned, it will be McCain. It's that simple. "

" My advice to you zach is to not vote for Obama. It would seem you are looking for a reason to not vote for the man, so just don't vote for him. Go ahead and vote for macain and you will get more of the same bush policies. When this country is even MORE ------ up because of Republican tactics then you can write in again and cry about that. My vote will be for Obama. "

" Oh, there is plenty of change as compared to the last 8 years. He is highly intelligent, articulate, well informed, respected and liked around the world, and creates a new found hope for the future around the world just to name a few. Maybe, just maybe, this country can once again move into a position of world leadership and respect. "

" What a difference 48 hours makes. With the release of the Gallup/USA Today shocker yesterday afternoon showing McCain leading by 4 points among likely voters, coupled with Rasmussen tightening down to just a 1-point Obama lead today and Gallup's tracking poll falling back to 6-points, Obama's lead in the RCP National Average is back down to 2.5% - the tightest it's been since June 7.

" I'm not an Obama supporter, but it does appear that he will win in November. The letter writer is mostly correct about Obama. The differences between Obama and McCain are so slight as to be almost negligible. They are both now talking about removing our "combat forces" from Iraq 16 months from taking office. Neither are actually talking about ending Bush's illegal, immoral, unjustified, and unconstitutional occupation of Iraq. Neither are actually talking about getting our military forces out of Iraq or leaving the permanent bases we have built there. It's all just more of the same. Support the troops, bring them home now.
