From 1D: Forty years ago today, Australia's Rod Laver won the first open Wimbledon tennis championship, defeating countryman Tony Roche 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Laver became the first player since Fred Perry (1934-36) to win the men's title three straight times.

10 years ago (1998):Sandy Bahmiller, a recent St. Mary's graduate, picked up $1,600 as nine youth bowlers claimed over $5,000 in bowling scholarship money.

Bahmiller, who will attend Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, and the other scholarship winners participated in the Bismarck-Mandan Youth Bowling Association for a combined 80 years.

Bahmiller received a $900 Eddy Bentley Scholarship, a $500 Bismarck-Mandan Women's Bowling Association Female Ability Scholarship and a $200 Capitol Lanes Scholarship.

Others receiving scholarship award winners are Jon Austin, Kris Schmidt, Jason Farstad and Curtis Hojian of Bismarck High; Mike Starck and Jason Schmidt of Century; and Jason Vogel and Josh Vogel of St. Mary's.

Austin is undecided about his college choice, Kris Schmidt is bound for Hawaii Pacific in Honolulu, Michael Stark, Jason Schmidt and Jason Farstad plan on attending Bismarck State, Hojian is headed to Northwest Technical College and Jason Vogel and Josh Vogel will either go to the University of Mary or BSC.

20 years ago (1988): Rain dominated the final day of the Mandan Jaycees Rodeo, but the veterans shined through.

In the bareback, Larry Brooks and Vern Millin tied for first with rides of 76. Millin and Shawn Kramer of Towner tied for the rodeo title.

In calf roping, Jim Howell won the final day and finished first overall. Tim Feland of Bismarck finished second on the final day with a time of 9.87.

In breakaway roping, Bunny Bail won the last day and the rodeo, while Ashley Ehr of Minot finished second in the final go-round.

In steer wrestling, Wade Sundby of Williston won the day, while Casey McInerney won the overall title. Sundby had the best time of the rodeo with his final round 4.51.

Tater Ward won the round and the rodeo in saddle bronc, while Hugh Connolly of Golden Valley tied for second in the round.

Melody Smith carried the day and rodeo in barrel racing, while Bismarck's Kim Birkeland was second in the final round.

Bismarck's Stuart Ternes won the final round of bull riding with an 80. He tied for the rodeo title with Darrell Hermanson of Kathryn.

50 years ago (1958): An error in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and one down gave Williston a 12-11 victory over Bismarck's American Legion Junior baseball team.

With the score knotted 11-all in the bottom of the ninth, Larry Barkie led off with a walk.

Ted Hopgood attempted to sacrifice, but nobody fielded the ball and there were two men on.

Bismarck got out of the jam temporarily when Barkie was picked off second, but Dennis Ditsworth walked and Ron Erdmann was hit with a pitch to load the bases.

Neil Rueter then grounded to second, but Dick Geiger muffed the ball and Hopgood crossed with the winning run.

Steve Woodcox started for Bismarck, was relieved by Al Lick in the sixth. Gary Harju hurled the ninth and took the loss.

Ron Carlson had a double and a triple for Bismarck and John Gallagher had a triple.

Kaiser and Hanson hurled for Williston with Hanson picking up the win.

Hoffelt had three hits, while Ouren scored two runs.
