10 years ago (1998):What a cliche - the airline losing the luggage.

Those staples of stale comedy acts, hapless baggage handlers, were even less funny than usual when they struck Bismarck's Melanie Carvell in Orlando.

That's because Carvell wasn't just another tourist popping in, and the missing item in question wasn't just a suitcase.

Carvell was there for the national triathlon championships, and lost in transit was her bike. Not just any bike, her bike.

"It's my little rocket ship," Carvell said. "It's custom made, designed just right for me. Without it, there was no point in my being here."

But this is a story with a happy ending. Carvell got her cycle back in time - barely - for the race, and she put it too good use. The 35-year-old finished 10th overall, good enough to qualify for the world championships, which will take place in Switzerland.

20 years ago (1988): Players on the Bismarck Hank's Sea Ray-Schneider Toyota men's team wouldn't mind if Bismarck opened up a new softball complex ... provided it's across the street from one of the hospitals.

Hank's-Schneider has been the walking wounded al season, with the most serious injuries coming to pitcher Dale Lein (badly bruised thumb) and outfielders Brad Ruff (sore hamstring) and Gus Claymore (bad knee).

Those three played in the McQuade softball tournament. Two others weren't so fortunate, getting injured in league play.

First, shortstop Steve Peterson suffered a fluky injury when he cracked a pinkie finger while sliding into a base.

Then, outfielder Joe Kary broke his wrist while diving after a line drive.

50 years ago (1958): MOTT- Bill Lince and Nick Kronbauer combined to hold Beach to five hits as Mott's Legion Juniors downed the visitors 18-4.

Mott collected 13 hits off Jim Thompson and Gary Thompson, including three doubles and two triples.

Kronbauer went 3-for-5 for the winners. Four other players hit safely twice for Mott, including Belmore, Grant, Kelsch and Margules. Luschinger and Fischer added hits.

Gary Thompson collected two safeties for Beach, while Jim Thompson, Buergle and Makelky added a hit each.
