Trivia answer

From 1D: At the start of the 1955-56 NBA season, there were a total of eight teams in the league, which lasted until the 1961-62 campaign in which one expansion team was added to the league. The Chicago Packers was the name of the expansion team that came in that season.

10 years ago (1998): RAPID CITY, S.D. — Dickinson State’s Jeremy Crane won his second national saddle bronc championship at the College National Finals Rodeo.

Crane, a junior from Bismarck, marked a 77 on his final ride to break a tie with Panhandle State of Oklahoma’s Rance Bray. Crane was four points better than Bray on his final head.

“It feels as good as the first,” Crane said. “I knew I had a good horse and I just wanted to ride him jump for jump.”

Dickinson State, which led going into the championship round, finished second in the men’s race.

20 years ago (1988): Now we know what happens when a group of 16-, 17- and 18-year-olds try to throw a welcome home party on someone else’s lawn. The hosts leave early.

Bismarck’s Jason Pudwill was the guest of honor at Mandan Memorial Ballpark, playing his first game for the Governors after returned from high school graduation in Woodbridge, Va.

It took about seven minutes to get his first hit. It took Bismarck seven innings to defeat Mandan 13-1. The Governors have won 19 straight games against the Chiefs.

“They have kids who expect to hit, expect to throw strikes and expect to win,” said Mandan coach Jim Koch.

The pitching of Chad Spotts and the hitting of Paul Cook and Jon Gums guaranteed a Bismarck victory.

Spotts allowed just four hits and two walks. He struck out eight. At one time he retired 10 batters in a row.

Cook went 4-for-4 with a double, triple and three runs batted in. Gums was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Brent Ruff added two hits.

50 years ago (1958): The Bismarck Legion Juniors, after appearing all but dormant for five innings, broke loose in their last two times at bat to down Miles City, Mont., 3-2.

Rich Olthoff again was the big gun in the Bismarck attack, collecting two hits in three times up, including a timely double, and stealing home with the tying run.

It was left to pitcher Al Lick to deliver the decisive blow, a single through the box into center field in the last of the seventh with Gordon Postovit racing home from second with the winning run.
