Home Depot will soon close its doors for good in Bismarck leaving behind a 102,700-square-foot building with a 25,700-square-foot garden center.

The property is for sale, listed at more than $10 million.

The building sits on a 10.84 acre lot and was built in 2004.

The north end of Bismarck has seen strong commercial growth. What kind of business would you like to see in that location? Leave us a comment and let us know.

" Chevy's a good Mexican restaurant? Somebody hasn't had good Mexican before. Anyway, to the question at hand. I swear the CEO of Home Depot could have come to Bismarck and explained that the closing was due to the sharp economic decline in most parts of the country and people still wouldnt get it. The Fargo Linens & Things closed and it was located on one of ND's busiest surface streets. Does that mean that Fargo isn't doing well? Of course not. Home Depot is a national company, and the closings were on a national scale. If only the Bismarck store had closed then I would believe that the store was failing. The store will not and should definitely NOT be made into anything other than future retail. Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom??? HAHAHAHA please, in ND? Minneapolis barely has those stores. Dave and Busters? Again, Minneapolis just barely got it's first location. Macy's is trash. Now Dillard's, Gordman's, Gander Mt., Borders, Sportsman's Warehouse those would be great for Bismarck. Toys R Us is quickly on their way out thanks to Wal Mart (much like KB). Trader Joes I could see one day in the next decade opening in Bismarck & Fargo, but even here in the home of Trader Joes (CA) I have never seen a Trader Joes anywhere near that large! Bed, Bath and Beyond could easily call a city the size of Bismarck home. Linens & Things won't be opening new stores anytime in the future so that's out. Burlington Coat Factory would succeed, as would a Steve & Barry's. Cost Plus World Market would do great in Bismarck. Costco would be a good addition. One has to remember that the MSA of Bismarck as of 2007 is only 103,000, consider that when thinking realistically what could come to Bismarck. Fargo, Billings, St Cloud, Rochester, Rapid City, Missoula.... they all have at least two or so of the stores I mentioned and they could do just as well in Bismarck as they do in those other communities. The building could easily be split into three separate big box retailers. "

Or definitely a bowling alley...I get sick of driving to Mandan.:p "

" Why should I believe that the fine people of Bismarck would support any other store in that location. Remember, people wouldn't go to Home Depot because of the little jog off of the main street to get to their parking lot. Any store that goes in that location will flounder unless they are the absolute lowest priced store in town, on everything. Not much room for a profitable business in Bismarck. Even with Home Depots policy of beating the competitions price by 10%, you people wouldn't support them enough to keep the doors open. Bismarck has the true Menard's mentality: "We'll buy JUNK if we can save a few cents!!!" "

WSI has injured workers that need jobs, retraining, basic assistance in finding a job and Job Service has the jobs and the employers. JS/WSI could offer a special program "B2W" "Back to Work" where employers get incentives for offering modified jobs to injured worker as they transition.

WSI BLDG: Could be made into an indoor activity center for families, teens, anyone and everyone. Dance parties (70's night, hard rock) pool, pizza, darts, anything and everything that fits. Get families to go out together and give young people somewhere to hang.

THE JS BLDG on CENTURY: Could be set up to assist those who suffer from mental illness.

THE JS BLDG ON DIVIDE: Could be for the homeless and for sex offenders with an appropriate separation and monitoring staff. "

That way instead of wasting city property on a ball park that is maybe used a few hours a week during 3 or 4 summer months they can play indoors year round. I'll be damned that this city can build dozens and dozens of ball parks and spend thousands and thousands of tax payers dollars on maintaining ball parks with light bills, treated grass, etc, etc. and then when some residents want 1 (one) indoor pool all hell breaks loose! Turn the Home Depot into an indoor softball park and include a bar as well. "

We need to figure out what we need in our community not just things we want like another food place or another clothing store. There are definately needs in the community that need to be addressed that aren't because we don't want to take the time or spend the dollars. We'll fund probationofficers for teens who have been in trouble but won't spend the dollars to keep then out of it.

Just a little story: In certain countries in a crowded place if a child is lost everyone around him/her claps until the parent finds them. It'd sure be nice if everyone cared about our youth here. "

I would rather have my child supervised while i was working during the summer months or during the school year prior from returning home from a job that may have working hours past 4PM. This program would also bring in more jobs to Bismarck = making something the entire community would benefit from by having this facility available to them. Keeping children safe I think should become an importance to everyone in the community after all they
ARE our future.

If the above suggestion is to hard for you to swallow, then how about giving some of your tax money for a better suggestion and we will convert the building into a Target house for children with CANCER and other terminal illnesses so they can have families nearby when they have to go to our medical facilities for treatments.

Can you honestly tell me and everyone else on here that you would decline your tax money for the sake of helping terminally ill children ? "

I almost fell out of my chair when someone mentioned Denver in the same sentence as Bismarck. retailers and service industries won't work, just ask Hooters, we don't have the workforce to staff another 100 low paying jobs. Maybe we could open a soup kitchen for the 26,000 residents that are suffering from lack of nourishment. Think twice about a Gander Mtn., Dicks sporting goods or Cabelas. Not much difference in price. I actually will drive to Mankato to go to the Scheels store!

Chuck E Cheese? Have you every been to one? You've got kids from 19 to walkers running amok, screaming, swearing, waiting in line to waste your money on games at an alarming rate. If your looking for something to do, pull out a deck of cards and teach your kids poker, crazy 8, pinnocle, or play a board game. They will enjoy that way more than bad pizza at chuck e cheese. You'll go 3 times and never go back.

Costco? just go to sams, it's the same thing. buy into a membership and buy in huge bulk sometimes more expensive than buying at walgreens.

I doubt any grocery chain store will survive, especially a "green" store. Way to much change and out of the comfort zone.

Good Luck Bis/Mdn If HD couldn't make it, another chain store will look real hard before investing. We don't need more retail stores, resturants,or fleet markets around here,we have plenty of those that apparently are not good enough for you anyways,so why add more. The children in our community are our future so why not put them in as a first priority in what is in the best interest for them, instead of ourselves for a

As far as what would happen to the where Kmart is today, maybe between Parks and Rec and Bismarck/Mandan Public schools, it could be used for various recreational uses, such as holding large tournaments for volleyball, basketball, soccer, or even agricultural events such as horse shows, rodeos, etc. The Civic Center just doesn't work sometimes, is too much $, or is unavailable and the middle and high schools just don't have enough room for some of these types of large tournaments other than using multiple facilities.

I admit the price tag for where the Kmart is today would probably be more than P&R and BPS could spend but think about 10-20 years from now how that type of facility could be used, with our continued growth in the area. "

Maybe the city could operate some sort of funded program that would still be affordable to parents. Bismarck needs to lure a manufacturing company such as Bobcat/Ingersol that offers career type jobs with REAL paychecks. Not many high school students aspire to go to work retail to earn their paychecks. Many high school students that are not fit for college deserve a chance to learn a craft with a manufacturing plant. This will help this state keep its young people, can you honestly say the same if the old Home Depot was replaced with a Pottery Barn? C'mon people, quit thinking about your shopping needs and think of the needs of the people that want to earn an honest paycheck! "

Randy wrote on Jun 20, 2008 11:13 AM:

" Even before merging with Kmart, Sears had began opening Sears Grand stores that were suppose to compete with stores like Kmart and Target. Many of them were actually former Kmarts sold to Sears during the bankruptcy. Following the merger they did explore a concept called Sears Essentials that were indeed a hybrid mixing the best of both stores. Now the Sears Essentials name has been dropped and all of them are calls Sears Grand. Both Kmart and Sears must reinvent themselves to survive. Bismarck has already seen the decline of two national catalogue retailers: Montgomery Ward and Best Products.

This type of store would indeed give Kmart a boost in the city, but it cannot be located so close to a Wal-Mart Supercenter or it would be a colossal failure. What this city really needs is a discount retailer to build on the west side, near Pinehurst Square. There isnt anything in that area to buy your everyday merchandise, and it would also be the first store of that type for those coming in from Mandan.

Heres the big question though, if Sears and Kmart were to combine into one store, who would fill their former locations? We would then have TWO large format locations open instead of one, including one very old and outdated former Kmart building that was constructed in 1971 and has seen little change since. "

" Theres a big difference between what you want to see there, what we actually need, and who will actually come. It seems most people here are saying Gander Mountain or something similar to compete with Scheels, and that seems like a very reasonable option. A Toys R Us would probably do very well here considering we no longer have a toy store, but we do already have two locations of the countrys largest toy retailer (Wal-Mart).

Im not sure what everyones fixation with Super Target is, they are not nearly as good as Super Wal-Mart. I lived in Targets home turf of Minneapolis for nearly four years, where there seems to be a Super Target on every corner, and I would avoid them at all cost. They dont have nearly the selection of a Super Wal-Mart. Further more, why would Target relocate after just building a new store? Target has a huge location advantage, so there is no reason for them to relocate just a few blocks away from a Wal-Mart Supercenter. FYI Super Targets arent even open 24 hours!

I see many who say turn it into an amusement center of some sort, much like the old Wheel-A-While we once had. I dont foresee the teens of this era spending any time in that sort of complex. With all the surrounding retail and restaurants, it would make sense that whomever moves into the building would be in the same line, or else it could negatively affecting the surrounding businesses, who rely on a steady stream on traffic for survival.

Ive seen some mention large retailers like IKEA and Costco, which are fine stores, however the building simply isnt large enough, especially not for an IKEA. This city isnt large enough to support that large of a high-end retailer like Macys, Bloomingdales, or Nordstrom either. "

I would also vote for a Children's Place. Maybe a Children's mini-mall in that store would be a good idea. I can just see the minivans lined up outside now.

One other idea would be a large indoor playground that could be easily powerwashed. The few indoor playgrounds we have now are always so dirty and poorly maintained that I rarely take my small children there in the winter. If I knew a place was sanitized /powerwashed every night, I'd be way more apt to take my kids there, and pay a fair price to get in. "

One example is Cabela's since Bismarck is on the outer edge of the Grand Forks market and REI will not move in because they want to be in bigger markets. "

Honestly- a Super Target would be the bomb! I love Target, but hate how difficult the store is to access now.

Costco could put Sam's out of business in this town too- would love to see that!
I think this part of town would be a better location for a warehouse store anyway. "

Mills Fleet Farm would be great too. Has anyone ever been to a Trader Joe's? I'd LOVE to see one in this state. "
