Bismarck police investigated three instances of guns going off in city limits over the weekend, including one incident where an 8-year-old boy was shot in the back with a BB.

Sgt. Dwight Offerman said the 8-year-old boy was swinging in his back yard on the 100 block of Cherokee Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Saturday when he heard a loud pop and felt something hit him in the back.

The boy was taken to a Bismarck emergency room, where X-rays revealed a BB was lodged in the lower left side of his back, Offerman said.

He said a neighbor had seen another neighbor's grandson shooting BBs at a dog the same day, but officers were unable to locate the boy or the grandfather. The case remains under investigation.

n Around 5:30 p.m. Friday, someone reported seeing people shooting a gun out of an apartment building at passing cars, Offerman said.

A 14-year-old boy was cited with discharing a firearm in city limits for allegedly firing an air-soft gun at passing vehicles.

n A 24-year-old Bismarck man reported at 12:15 a.m. Saturday that his 9 mm pistol had accidentally discharged while he was working with it in his apartment on the 200 block of West Interstate Avenue,Offerman said. A bullet went through an interior wall, bounced off a microwave and became lodged into a second interior wall. The bullet never left the man's apartment.

The report will be forwarded to the city attorney.

" To Srahn, I guess you were trying to make some kind of a sick joke, it wasnt funny! By the way you didnt even have your facts right. Sen. Clinton made reference to the assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy not his brother Pres. John F. Kennedy. Obama wont last long. ??? The utter contemptibleness you conveyed in an irresponsible crack like that says volumes about You and your character. "

" To the family of the boy: Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. Several years ago I to, was a victim of a Co2 gun drive by shooting. The paintballs managed to cause lacerations and lesions to my facial area after exploding inside my mouth. The individuals involved, after an investigation were formally charged. Tho my wounds have healed,it does change your emotional status. I am now more aware of my surroundings and less trustworthy of things i use to take for granted. Please, if you want to have ownership of a gun. Take a hunter safety course(s) and if you think your child is to young to comprehend the class, then he/she is to young to have a gun in their possession. People and animals are not targets.most importantly guns are not toys. ~ thankfully a life was not lost here. Stay strong little man,I wish you well. "

" The inability to "locate the boy or the grandfather" at that given time had better not be the end of the story. To Okay- I agree gun safety should be taught, but these things will still happen if they are done deliberately and this may be the case. There are jerks in the world and they can be found at every age and stage of life. "

" To another mom: *I* am not the one cracking jokes so I have no reason to feel stupid about anything I said. I simply said that I laughed at the comment that expositor had said with sarcasm that everyone should have caught and DIDNT. Expositor's comment seemed to put some people in a huff and there's no reason for it, now he's (she's??) apologized and all is calm once more.
I am sorry the boy was shot and is now scared to play or even sleep in his own room.
I do hope that whatever little monster is out running around with the BB gun is found. "

" to mother of boy shot: I am so sorry this happened to your son! I will pray for your family.
to Expositor and Amanda: There is a time for jokes and then there is NOT! I can only imagine how stupid you must have felt when the mother of the boy shot actually responded to your stupidity with such grace. "

" To mother of child shot:

I am so sorry this happened to your son. It really can take an emotional toll on a child and this is just so unfortunate. With it being so close to this pour child's lung if it would have gone any deeper it could have caused serious damage! I hope that people see now that BB guns can hurt an individual. Now not only does your son have to deal with the pain of the shot but also being afraid to do out and play? This is so sad. No 8 year old should feel scared to go out in his own backyard. I truly hope they find the person that did this to your son and your family and when they do I hope that they are punished to the fullest extent!

My thoughts and prayers are with you and I hope this is something that your son will eventually be able to get through. "

" I placed a call to the local Scheels gun expert. He confirmed that BB guns can be purchased that range in velocity from 300 feet per second (fps) to 1200 fps. The latter of the two is the same as a 22 caliber rifle and is achieved with a single action (no pump required). It does not seem as though most people are treating this as a shooting or acknowledging the severity. The BB remains in the boy's back and is very near his lung. Whether it was intentional or an accident remains to be determined. Let's leave politics out this situation. "

" to: Mother of child -- I apologize for my levity. I hope and pray for the well-being of your son. Seriously now, the BB is still inside him? "

" If BB guns count as "guns going off", then the "gun" category must also include cap guns and water guns. It makes me wonder, have pea-shooters been banned yet? "

Amanda wrote on Jun 10, 2008 5:53 PM:

" Sorry I had to do it expositor but you know how some people can get......

To not funny, yes, we know that someone being shot, even with a BB, isn't something one should laugh about as it could lead to a very surious problem.
The kid who is out shooting dogs and other kids needs to be taught a lesson on how to handle a gun, even if its just one that shoots BBs. If you're going to be upset with someone be upset with that kids' parents for not teaching him that DOGS and KIDS are NOT targets. "

" There was no surgery, it was too dangerous to remove the BB, it is right by his lung and came within 1 inch of puncturing his lung. He is fine physically but his emotional state is not fine. He i scared to play in his own backyard and does not want to sllep in his room because it is on the side of the house where the shot came from. Also, the story about the boy shooting at dogs that day is wrong. The girl that told the police that failed to clarify that that happened 2 years ago. We still have no clue as to who did this but it doesn't seem to me that it was an accident. "

" I don't think there is anything funny with a child being shot with a BB. A few years ago there was a boy in northwest ND that was shot with a BB while on his paper route, and it punctured a lung. BB guns are not toys!!! Parents need to teach their kids about safety and respect. "

" To Explain: Umm....did expositor's sarcasm fly right by you? I caught it and I'm sure others did too. Made me laugh.
Really, they had to get the BB out somehow didn't they? I'm sure it would be something a bit more simple than an OR and ICU tim; everyone else knows that, expositor just wanted to have fun. "

expositor wrote on Jun 10, 2008 1:23 PM:

" Well, doesn't it stand to reason, that if a projectile (a BB, just for the sake of discussion) is lodged in a patient's back, how else can that foreign object be removed without use of a scalpel? Don't try to hustle me, Mister. I've seen every episode of MASH at least once, some episodes I've seen 20 times or more. Yes, sir, don't try to tell me I don't know my way around an operating theatre. "
