The Bismarck Tribune won 40 awards in the Better Newspaper Contest, announced over the weekend at the North Dakota Newspaper Association annual convention in Dickinson, including www.bismarcktribune.com being named the best newspaper Web site in the state's largest circulation category.The newspaper has 29 individual or two-person winners and four additional teams of winners named in the competition.
Winners from the Tribune in the 12,001 or more category for advertising included:
First place - Lynae Hanson in entertainment/liquor ad, newspaper advertising promotion, newspaper readership promotion and community promotion; Stacey Long in vehicle ad and outdoor/sports ad; Jean Bertsch in single ad and health care ad; Cecile Roth in vehicle ad; Marla Carmin in outdoor/sports ad; Jean Hill in single ad; Veronica Selway in entertainment/liquor ad; Randy Baumgartner in health care ad; Shawn Decker in newspaper community promotion; the retail sales/classified design team in special advertising section; and the inside classified/classified design team in signature page.
Second place - Decker won awards in ad series, small place ad, newspaper advertising promotion, agriculture ad and community service; Sharon Jeffries was awarded in small place ad and agriculture ad; Hanson was a winner in community service; Long was awarded in ad series; Jill Balzer and Donna Wiese were honored in food ad; Lisa Gartner and Marla Carman were honored in vehicle ad; and the outside sales team was noticed for special advertising section.
Third place - Gartner, health care ad and small place ad; Decker, health care ad; Kevin Keller, vehicle ad; Karen Emter, small place ad; Lisa Weisz and Angie Gray, use of color.
Honorable mention -Decker, food ad, apparel ad, newspaper readership promotion; Kristin Wilson, food ad; Jerry Weisgerber, apparel ad; Misty Waters and Doug Ding, outdoors/sports ad; and the telesales/classified team, signature page.

Mike McCleary, portrait photo, first place, and feature photo, third place; Kelly Hagen, humorous personal column, second place, and headline, second place; Lou Babiarz, sports column, second place, and sports reporting, honorable mention; Amy Taborsky, pictorial photo, second place; Mindy Gonzales, section/feature fronts design excellence, second place; Sara Kincaid, feature reporting series, third place; Eric Hammond and staff, sports page-section, third place; copy desk staff, front page design excellence, honorable mention; and Crystal R. Reid, business news reporting, honorable mention.
