GRAND FORKS - A Mandan accountant will be running under the Democratic Party banner for state auditor this fall.

Daryl Splichal, 52, announced Sunday at the Democratic convention that he was interested in seeking the nomination. Splichal was unanimously nominated by the convention.

"They need a strong candidate there and I decided I'm ready," he said.

Splichal, a former employee of MDU Resources in Bismarck, said his 23 years of accounting experience will help assure voters that he will be a competent auditor. He said one of his major goals will be making sure the state auditor's office has enough resources to do its job.

His endorsement came at the last moment after the Democrats spent months in candidate recruitment for various offices. Splichal said he waited so long to announce because he's new to politics and wasn't really concerned with a news announcement tour.

He said he's been considering a run for the auditor's race for a few months.

He holds a bachelor's degree from Dickinson State University and a master's of business administration from North Dakota State University.

Splichal was raised in Dickinson and now lives in Mandan. He and his wife, Mary, have two children.

Splichal will face off against Republican Bob Peterson, who has held the office since 1996 and received his party's re-election endorsement week at the Republican convention in Fargo.

In 2004, Peterson defeated Brent Edison with 64 percent of the vote.
