Career and technical programs in the Bismarck School District received an evaluation in January.The programs meet or exceed the standards of the North Dakota State Board for Career and Technical Education, which performed the evaluation. Programs are reviewed by the state board every five years.
"There are a lot more commendations than recommendations," said Dale Hoerauf, director of career and technical education in Bismarck schools.
Each program is evaluated in 12 areas, then commendations, suggestions and recommendations are given for each program. The commendations are areas in which the programs excel, the suggestions are areas that the programs could improve, and the recommendations are items that must be addressed.
In all, the district received 15 recommendations in seven areas. The district had 18 areas evaluated. The district has until May 5 to give the state board a plan for addressing the recommendations.
The recommendations:
Agriculture education
n The greenhouse needs the screen door replaced with an all-weather door to improve heating in the space.
n The class description for horticulture-botany needs to change the wording about FFA and Supervised Agricultural Experience from "optional" to "integral" to encourage participation.
n More classroom and lab space for the agriculture programs at Simle "to provide a better quality and safer environment."
n Family and consumer science-child care.
n Remove and regrout the kitchen countertops at Bismarck High School.
n Eliminate the fumes from the building and grounds equipment in the garage-storage area adjacent to the FACS rooms at Century High School.
n Find an alternative way to provide power to the sewing machines at Century High School so that cords do not hang from the ceiling.

n Instructor Richard Bahm should complete National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation certification.
n Aviation technology.
n Need instruction on material safety data sheet and hazardous tool use.
Commercial art,
digital design
n Instruction on using material safety data sheets.
n Training in using sharp instruments, such as X-acto knives.
n Signs to highlight hazardous tools.
n Construction technology.
n Destroy written tests used more than two years ago.
n Keep current and previous year's written and performance tests on file.
n Fix recorder for the video security system.
Electronics
technology
n Signs identifying locations of fire extinguisher, material safety data sheets, and other safety items.
Some of the suggestions by the board involved issues of space, which will be resolved when the district builds the career and technical center at Bismarck State College. The plans for the new building were commended by the board.
