Fargo South showed Friday night that it plans to play basketball at 150 mph.Century, however, was only able to crank it up to 148.
So South escaped with an 80-77 boys basketball victory over the Patriots at the CHSgym.
The contest was the opener for both South, favored to win the East Region title, and Century, ranked third in the West.
In the first game of the night, Fargo South's girls rode a big second half to a 57-44 victory over Century.
South's appeared to be on the way to smooth sailing over calm seas early in the first half.
But then the Bruins watched two generous leads get away against the tenacious Patriots.
South forward DustinHerrmann said Century shook the Bruins awake.
"We thought we had it won. Coming into the season we thought we were pretty good and we thought we'd get an easy win. But they fought back and made it a game," Herrmann noted.
Up 38-31 at halftime, South fattened the advantage to 44-31 before Century surged to life.
An 11-2 run enabled CHSto cut the deficit to 46-44 on a Tanner Govig layup with 4:40 elapsed in the second half.
Then South took off again, using a 12-4 run to make it 58-46 with 9:44 to play. Another 14-6 blitz, climaxed by two Dustin Herrmann free throws, put the Bruins in command 72-56 with 5:39 remaining.
Century, which had fits with South's press to the tune of 25 turnovers, turned on a little defensive juice to battle back.
The Patriot press forced four turnovers and Century shaved the deficit to 76-70 on Ben Kringstad's shot from the paint with 3:14 to play.
Two more defensive stops enabled the Patriots to make it 76-74 on a Kringstad free throw with 2:17 left on the clock.
That's where South drew the line.Ismail Kareem's basket and a pair of Herrmann free throws were the only points the rest of the way, save a 3-pointer by Century's Evan Kendall at the buzzer.
Herrmann said he was confident the Bruins would come through at crunch time. "Once it got down to the end of the game we realized what we had to do and got back to our game plan," he said. "That's what won it for us."
That game plan called for keeping fresh legs on the floor.
"We had a nine-to-10-guy rotation when we got the big lead. ... The bench came in and did the job (at the end)," Herrmann pointed out.
Century coach RichHovland said the Patriots couldn't match South's depth.
"We ran out of gas at times. ... We've got to go deeper to play at that level," Hovland observed. "That's a very good basketball team."
Century turned the ball over 25 times and took it away 20 times in the free-wheeling affair that included 138 field goal tries.
"If we cut down on the turnovers we're going to be OK," Hovland noted.
The CHScoach said the late-game comeback based on full-court pressure was a pleasant surprise.
"That was something we didn't know we had in our repertoire. We got out and created some things defensively,"he said.
Herrmann, a burly 6-foot-4 forward, scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds. Jordan Allard, a 6-7 guard, tallied 21 points and yanked down seven rebounds. Kareem, a 6-3 forward, finished with 16 points.
Century's big men led the way offensively. Kringstad, a stout 6-3 forward, scored 20 points and nabbed eight rebounds. Six-foot-8 post Karl Effertz added 17 points.
Century returns to action again today, playing host to Fargo North in an afternoon doubleheader. South goes against Mandan at 1:30 at the Civic Center.

Century ended up on the short end of the score by playing Jekyll-and-Hyde basketball.
The Patriots jumped to a 29-19 halftime lead but mustered only 14 points after intermission.
South, after shooting a miserable 24 percent the first half, found the range after the break, sinking 15 of 32 shots. Century, meanwhile, hit only six of 26 shots in the second half while committing 15 turnovers.
Caitlyn Haring, South's returning all-region guard, said there was a reason for the Bruins' bleak first-half effort.
"We just had a lot of jitters,"she said."We knew we had to come back. We're a lot better team then we showed at the beginning."
South abandoned its first-half man-to-man in favor of a zone. Haring said that was part of the recipe for South's comeback.
"We knew we had to change up our defense and we had to be tougher with the ball. We wanted to be very aggressive,"she noted.
Haring scored a game-high 16 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had seven assists. She scored a dozen points in the second half.
Tricia Sorensen and Tasha Michelsen paced Century with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
