10 years ago (1997):FARGO- North Dakota State quarterback Kevin Feeney can direct any offense. Kelly Howe is convinced of that.
"There were questions about him being able to be a drop-back passer," said Howe, a UND safety. "A lot of people didn't think he could do it, but he's proved he can. He's quick and is really smart back there."
Feeney, a junior, doesn't understand why there would be any concern.
"I don't know if there ever was any dount," Feeney said. "I thought Icould do it because it is somewhat similar to what we did in high school. I got labeled a running quaterback when I got here."
The two Bismarck products square off for the Nickel Trophy this weekend when NDSUplays UND.
20 years ago (1987): Here we are, one game away from the end of the regular season, and the WDA football race still reads like a mystery novel.
St. Mary's and Dickinson Trinity completed another chapter. It was exciting reading, almost with a surprise ending, but the 7-2 win by the Saints provided few new clues.
"I'll still say it," said St. Mary's assistant Tom Stebner. "We have the best defense in the WDA."
Ken Kraft's 7-yard touchdown run provided enough points. Except for Mike Tschider's conversion kick, Kraft was in on all the scoring.
He purposely ran out of the end zone with 59 seconds left for a safety when the Saints were trapped deep in their own territory.
50 years ago (1957): The Bismarck Junior College Mystics took advantage of an air-tight defense and opposition miscues to whitewash the Bottineau Foresters 27-0.
Marv Weisenberger, Bob Kupper, Glen Upham and Del Schramm scored touchdowns, while Fred Weber had two extra points.
Jay McCallum recovered a fumble for the Mystics.
