10 years ago (1997):MANDAN- The Mandan girls basketball team didn't have too much trouble with Dickinson as the Braves cruised to a 71-38 WDA win.

For Mandan, Amanda Dietrich led the way with 21 points, while Wendy Davis added 12 and Lisa Carlson chipped in 10 points. Scheryl Kottsick had seven points and six rebounds.

For the Midgets, Erica Tangen had 12 points and six rebounds.

20 years ago (1987): Holly Higgins took the last shot. Not at the right time, but it was the right shot.

Come again?

"Any time Holly can get a shot in the paint, that's a good short for us," said Steve Meier, St. Mary's coach, moments after his Saints held off rallying Dickinson Trinity for a 55-53 victory in Western Dakota Association girls basketball.

With the score knotted at 53-all, St. Mary's had possession under its own basket. Meier was hoping for a successful last shot with 3 or 4 seconds to play. But Higgins took a pass from Theresa Berger and launched a short jumper with a defender tightly guarding her.

The shot was successful with 8 seconds left and proved to be the game-winning field goal.

Tami Valeu had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Saints, while Higgins added 10 points and nine rebounds.

For the Titans, Julie Bosch had 17 points and 18 rebounds, while Dennette Heiser added 12 points.

50 years ago (1957): The Linton High School football team, kingpins of the South Central Conference, will be laying a 21-straight victory string on the line this year. They were a 7-0 last year.

Coach Bill McGarvey lost 10 men from last year's team, but has four promising newcomers in ends Bob Fischer and Bob Roberts, quarterback Dennis Guthmueller and guard Ray Wagner.

Those lost from last year were Matt Burgard, Rodney Lipp, Bill Schwartzenberger, Jack Ramey, Bill Bosch, Herm Schatz, Al Fischer, Gordon Rudy, Gerald Roberts and Victor Lovell.
