No doubt about it, the world is a noisy place in which to live.

From kids to pets, cars to construction, music to motorcycles, trains to planes, we're surrounded by a constant barrage of sound.

Some noises, however, seem to rise above the daily din of aural attacks.

So, we'd like to hear from you: What noises do you find especially annoying and why?

We have posted a survey online to find out. We want you to tell us what your top bothersome noisemaker is, why it is and what shoulds be done about it.

The survey can be accessed at http://www.bismarcktribune.com/issues. We encourage you to take the survey and, if you like, to leave your contact information so we can follow up with you.

When are our elected city officials going to do something about Bismarck's "Quality of Life" and eliminate the noisy whistles from the trains in Bismarck? Fargo and Moorhead among other "forward thinking" communities are already enjoying a much better "Quality of Life" in their respective cities. Why does this "Quiet Zone" issue continue to be put on the "back burner" and is not being addressed by our elected officials? "

Now that we do in 2007 that reason is not valid and has not been for years. Now with the technology available this rididculously loud noise serves no is just the cheapest way for the railroads to say they did their legal duty when accidents occur. "

" To try and reason with owners of loud cars, motorcycles, etc.... Try and imagine that everyone owned and took pleasure in making the loudest noise possible in his/her vehicle. Non stop you would hear this, not be able to have a conversation with someone 3 ft from you, be waken at night or during the day if some of you work nights, etc, etc, etc. There would be constant loud noise. Why I ask is it ok for some to create this and the rest of us are subject to endure it? If I want to make noise I'll turn on the blender, start the lawn mower, maybe blast a bullhorn in my ear. Would it be ok it I did that to you just because I like the sound of it? They make (silent to humans) ear piercing sound waves that are used to drive out vermin that you simply plug into the wall outlet. These don't kill the rodent, they just make them as uncomfortable as they can so they will leave and find a quiet home. A train makes noise for a reason, a airplane or jet to my knowledge can't be any quieter than they are..... someone putting loud exhaust on a little car, truck or driving a loud motorcycle are done on purpose and create nothing other than to disturb others and could be completely avoided. If these people lived on a island and had no one to see (or listen in this case) to their noise I doubt they would have bothered in the first place. "

So, in the end it's better to hear a train at 4:30 in the morning than hear of a other "inncident." As far as Planes go, for heavens sake, move if you don't like the sound of planes, it's not like one or even a few people are going to get a whole airport to move! Automobiles, well the fact that most cars and other forms of transportation move at about 25 mph (and that's following speed limit) through residental areas that "loud" vehicle will be past your house in 5.....4....3.....2....1.... enough said!!! All of the schools from bismarck that participate in the parades practice before school. If you don't like this then you should just move. We would get claps and whistles for the job we were doing. It is nice to know that there are a lot of students still interested in the band and making something of themselves. You ought to be proud when you hear the band playing and marching by your house. It wouldn't kill you to get out of bed and not sleep until all hours of the day. REV EM UP!!!!! Or even better yet.. if you do have a loud bike or car move to the county instead of town. you dont pay city tax anymore and the sheriffs dept are mature enough to not play around with such trivial stuff. When Bismarck PD officers grow up they want to become a burliegh county sheriff. "

The sounds of trucks is great especially when the jake brake is on or if they have a detroit engine. You know the old detroit engines that sounded like a train when they started up. The sounds I really hate to hear are a weed eater and the boombox on wheels cars. "

Yea, moving may not be the best option for you, but cutting every little thing that makes noise will turn this town into Retirementville, USA-not that we're not on our way to that already. And regarding the 80 db noise ordinance-this is copied right from the article 'Feel the Noise'. "In a normal conversation, the sounds of speech are normally 50 to 60 decibels, according to Ness."
