Peterson has a better day

In baseball, it's taken as an article of faith that things will even out.

There's no guarantee everything will balance out in 24 hours' time, though.

But Tyler Peterson was on a limited time frame, so he made the books balance quickly.

Peterson, in just his second day with the Bismarck Governors helped the team to a pair of wins Saturday.

The Governors downed Jamestown 6-3 and 8-5 in an interdivisional Legion doubleheader at Haaland Field.

Peterson, a 16-year-old right-hander, picked up a save with an inning of shutout relief in the first game. He had a hand in five of the Govs' runs in the second contest.

Peterson delivered a bases-loaded second-inning triple to right-center and came in to score on JonHerold's sacrifice fly. He singled and scored on Herold's two-run single as Bismarck plated two insurance runs in the sixth.

Most of the summer Peterson has been with the Reps, a 16-year-old team, playing left field and taking a regular pitching turn. Friday he played with the Governors for the first time and went 0-for-5 in a split with Wahpeton.

"That was not too hot for me," he said of his Governors debut.

Saturday was different though. "Probably an A-," Peterson said in evaluating his outing. "It was a lot more fun today than it was yesterday. It's great to play with these guys."

Peterson said he drew much more satisfaction with his 2-for-4 showing at the plate than he did from his inning on the hill.

"It's a lot more fun when you're able to hit the ball and it helped out the team more," he observed.

Bismarck got the upper hand in the opener with a two-run second inning that included an RBIdouble by NathanSchlosser.

BradySchoeler's two-run single evened the score in the top of the third. Things stayed that way until the fifth when JonHausauer singled in Jeremy Campbell with the go-ahead run.

The Govs clinched things with a three-run third. Winning pitcher Cody Erhardt and Matt Loomis slapped run-scoring singles in the three-run rally and Campbell chased home a run with a double.

Erhardt went the first six innings for the win and Peterson closed in the seventh.

Peterson was the main pest as the Governors jumped on the visiting Wolfpack early in the second game.

Jake Hruby singled in two runs in the first inning and Peterson's three-bagger into the gap in right-center was the catalyst in a four-run second.

"The count was 3-and-1 and Iwas looking for a fastball," Peterson related. "He gave me one down the middle and I did something with it."

Up 6-1, Governors right-hander Darron Olson, another Reps callup, withstood a four-run Wolfpack third inning to get the win.

Ross Hogan belted a two-run double off Olson to get the inning going. Run-scoring singles by Greg Brown and Ian Hogan ensued.

Olson got through the fourth and fifth innings without further damage. Torey Bohan and DustinWenzel finished up with an inning of relief apiece.

Considering the patchwork pitching staff he threw together for Saturday's twin bill, Governors coach Mike Skytland was delighted with the outcome.

"For the most part our guys threw strikes and we played good defense behind them,"Skytland noted. "If you do that you've got a good chance to win."

Bismarck, which has won eight of its last 10 games, hits the road on Monday. The Governors play at Devils Lake on Monday, visit Grand Forks onTuesday and travel to Williston onThursday. The Monday and Thursday dates are Western Division doubleheaders.

Jamestown, which has lost five straight, skidded to 9-20.
