Last week, some customers of BTINet may have experienced delays in receiving e-mails, anywhere from a five-minute hold to up to eight hours.A spokesperson at BTI, an area Internet service provider, said it may have been a problem that came with an updated spam system. But the spam filter company, Barracuda, has since clarified the issue.
According to Barracuda, BTINet has several large clients, including media customers, who tend to send large image and video files. The ISP experienced a delay in anti-virus scanning of these larger files, so the two companies have worked together to fine-tune the file size threshold to allow larger files to pass through without scanning.
Tracy Yen, with Barracuda, said the new file size limit for BTI should enhance their ability to scan messages that may be more likely to contain malicious content without delaying other messages.
Mitch Stafford with BTI Net confirmed that the issue has calmed, but added that they were continuing to work with Barracuda for a permanent fix.
"The performance is back to what it was prior to having that problem, so we don't see delays anymore,"Stafford said. "Barracuda's been very helpful."
Midcontinent Communications, another area Internet service provider, said they were not having similar problems.
