Norquist quote is mean-spirited

I see that Grover Norquist teamed up with Duane Sand and Americans For Prosperity at an event in Bismarck this past weekend to rally support for an initiated measure designed to cut taxes in North Dakota.

I doubt many people know who Grover Norquist is, and I doubt many people care. But they should. I have run across his name several times and am both dumbfounded at how he could be so influential in national politics and outraged at what he has helped do to our country.

But of all the mean-spirited quotes I have ever read that were attributed to him, one stands out. It is from a translation of an interview he apparently did in Mexico, and in it he essentially calls the Greatest Generation un-American and seems to gloat that they are dying:

"This (the Greatest Generation) has been an exception in American history, because it has defended anti-American policies.  They voted for the creation of the welfare state and obligatory military service. They are the base of the Democratic Party.  And they are dying."

I hope this quote is used against any Republican who was foolish enough to join him and Sand at the Bismarck event.

" Smedley -- Enjoyed your book, "War is a Racket". Wish you a safe return to CONUS and hope we can get together in support of Veterans for Peace actions. "

" While I do not agree with much of what Norquist has to say in regard to social policies, he does have a point when it comes to some economic policies. Trying to make him a jack of all trades is like saying a mechanic should know how to perform brain surgery. I doubt this Americans for Prosperity group is going to go anywhere, but at least there's a group out there pushing the agenda on taxes. But like most people, state income taxes are not my problem. It's property taxes. I would like to wait and see what happens with the plan they came up with in the legislature before I get too out of hand. I think the Democrats are right in that we need to send more "home," or back to cities, counties, and especially schools. The brunt of our tax burden comes from schools because the legislature has repeatedly failed to properly fund them. I would like to see a group get up and push for that as well - someone other than NDEA, which was given a stigma when it played politics and acted like a union in endorsing Heidi over Hoven years back. If some of our better educated came out and pushed for that, those people who know how important high-quality education is, maybe we'd see more of a reaction. Until then, we're stuck seeing uneducated hillbillies who can't get a decent paying job and those who like to keep people down rally against it. That's what's sad. Not some guy whith flawed ideas coming to Bismarck to talk about taxes. "
