The tragic anniversary comes and goes each spring without even a minor observance, but a day of infamy, June 8, is soon to come to our nation.

This June 8 will mark the 40th year since Israel attacked the USS Liberty, killing 34 and wounding 75 Americans. On that date in 1967, the undefended communications vessel was in international waters 15 miles north of the Sinai peninsula when Israel launched its deadly air and torpedo boat fusillade. Claiming it to be an accident, Israel was at a loss to explain precisely how its Mossad intelligence network — generally regarded as the world best espionage organization — couldn’t identify a clearly marked U.S. Navy craft.

Following the carnage, Israel offered two apologetic notes to our government. America media of the day reported that Defense Department insiders went on record to say the attack must have been deliberate, figuring the Israelis believed the doomed ship had intercepted messages proving their state initiated the Six Day War against the Arabs.

On June 8 this year, we as a country should share a moment of silence for the murdered men of the USS Liberty and demand total accountability from Israel.

" On October 2, 2007 The Chicago Tribune published a cover story about the USS Liberty. The cover story also included two full inside pages in the first section of the newspaper. The story was written by Chicago Tribune, Washington writer, John Crewdson. The story can be seen on line at www.ChicagoTribune.com or at the Baltimore Sun at www.BaltimoreSun.com Search: USS Liberty story. Less than 54 hours after the Liberty story was published, the Chicago Tribune blocked the Topix Comment Board regarding the Liberty. The comments about the attack of the Liberty, were too hot for the Chicago Tribune to handle. A record number of comments were being made and they were not sympathetic to Israels position. The story also appeared in the Baltimore Sun and the identical comment board ran on their website. The comment board is currently running on the website if you wish to read and comment: www.BaltimoreSun.com Search: USS Liberty Story Israel and their friends in the MEDIA and AIPAC have done everything in the book to block any and all story's related to the Israli attack against the USS Liberty. Americans need email this story to all of their contacts. Even though this story is 40 years old, it is not resolved. All Americans must know about the Liberty attack so that this nevers happens again. www.ussliberty.org www.ussliberty.com www.JusticeForLiberty.com "

" June 8, 1967 will go down in AMERICAN HISTORY as the day ISRAEL began to dismantle the SOVEREIGNTY of the United States of America. The fact that LBJ and the American government has allowed ISRAEL to commit WAR CRIMES against Americans without paying a price and in fact, have been rewarded for their TERRORIST acts. ISRAEL has known that it can exploit and betray the United States of America at will, without any consequence. Lavon Affair anyone. ISRAEL exists today only by the grace of our "Christian God" and the support of misguilded "Zionist Christians" who have been mislead by their spirtual leaders. Once Americans begin to see the truth behind the Treason and Betrayal of our leaders and groups like AIPAC, ADL, ACLU, etc....Support for this so-called ally will disappear. The United States of America gives half of all of its annual world support to this tiny little country called ISRAEL, even after killing our brave American servicemen on The USS Liberty. As far as many of us see it, ISRAEL is no better than HITLER, in fact, in many ways they are even WORSE. If they continue on this path, they will eventually cease to exist... "

" Thank you for publishing this article about the USS Liberty. Not many Americans are aware of this tragedy. They should be. War crimes were committed during this 75 minute attack by air and by sea - war crimes that have gone unpunished for forty years now. These men and the families of the victims ought to be given their day in court. "

" as an israeli, i can't believe how many people here in the comments have true hate for israel. i am not religious and not an israeli patriot. as far as i am concerned, all the occupied territories should be given back to the palestinians as well as half of jerusalem. but, let me assure you - israel is NOT a terrorist state. all the attackes israel is doing is to try and keep the safety of the country. in any war there are mistakes and misfires. but please people - when you call israeli a terrorist state, or when you say it does "ethnic cleansing" - you should know that you are repeating slogans that you were brainwashed to say. israel is not "evil". it's just a country struggling with the intense problems attacking her. " The Liberty was not just a spy ship, but had state of the art radar jamming technology that was used to disable Egyptian positions for 200+miles. The Israelis then sprayed the Egyptian airfields with LSD-25 and rendered the Egyptian Air Force helpless, destroying the planes on the ground. Google USS Liberty Israeli Egyptian LSD-25 for the rest of the story. "

" "It was a tragic case of mistaken identity and nothing more." This is exactly what government wanted US to believe. Survivors of the incident say their ship was attacked numerous times over a period of hours. The American flag flying on the ship was clearly visible. The surviving crew were threatened by superiors if spoke to anyone of the attacks. No, this was much more than a tragic case of mistaken identity. "

" I also stand by Israel. Take Gaza as an example. Israel gave it away, and today it's government consists of known Arab terrorist organizations fighting against each other. Arabs have almost every other piece of land in the middle east to themselves, but they are never happy unless the Jews are gone. Israel has shown restraint time and time again. Israel needs torah observant Jews for their leaders, not leaders that work against them by giving away the land to people who have proven that they cannot govern themselves. "

" Mr. Nassif is woefully uninformed about the facts of The Liberty Incident. See the findings of the US Navy Court of Inquiry available from the Navy Judge Advocate General, The National Security Agency report and releases nsa.gov, The CIA intelligence memorandums of 13 & 21 June 1967 released State Department Vol. XIX Foreign Relations of the US. or look at the original documents on thelibertyincident.com It was a tragic case of mistaken identity and nothing more. " Israel is not a true ally and friend of the United States, nor has it ever been. The cover-up of the Liberty attack is just one visible incident of how America's politicians have been influenced and fooled for decades by the active Israel lobby in this country. Israel's interests are not American interests. Israel should be treated the same as any other third world terrorist state. We have been fooled into believing that Israel is "special" and deserves special attention. Not so. Israel is just one more source of violence and instability in the Middle East. "

" Mr. Nassif has his facts wrong. Israel's terrorist attack on the USS Liberty resulted in 34 U.S. servicemen being killed and 173 servicemen being wounded. There has never been a FULL Congressional investigation into the matter. Israel did pay $12 million in reparations. Congress just happened to increase Israel's aid package by $15 million that year, so Israel paid us back with our own money and got a few million extra for the effort. Israel gets $4 billion a year courtesy of American taxpayers. They have actively fought any real investigation into their terrorist attack. They have spied on us as was evidenced in Pollard's conviction and continue to whine that we should release him. They possess nuclear weapons but refuse to join the IAEA, sign the non-proliferation treaty or allow inspections of their nuclear facilities. Israel continues to disregard any attempt at adhering to the U.S. Road Map for peace with the Palestinians. Israel continues to commit countless war crimes and ethnically cleanse all of Palestine. Israel is a rogue country that we certainly don't need as an ally. "

" Mr. Nassif did not engage in any "anti-Israel" comments; he merely spoke of the Liberty incident and some of the reasons the Israeli's may have attacked the ship. Those who survived the attack have no doubts whatsoever that the Liberty was deliberately targeted, especially since the U.S. Navy vessel was clearly marked, flying the United States flag, and with radio messages indicating it was no accident. Remember, too, that in 1967 Israel was not the U.S. ally that it is today. It would not be until after the 6-Day war (1967) and especially the Yom Kippur war (1973) that the American and Israeli governments began to work together more closely. Prior to that time, or between 1948 and 1967, the U.S. did not trust Israel (remember American reaction to the Israeli invasion of Egypt in 1956 with the French and English; the US and USSR united to tell Israel and France and England to immediately withdraw). So then why did Israel atatck the Liberty? In the lead-up to the Israeli pre-emptive attack, in which it destroyed the air forces of several Arab nations, Israel feared her plans would become known to anyone, including the US, and sought to stop any potential release of information in that regard. The Liberty was a spy and communications vessel, and was in a position to find out about the attack. I cannot imagine such a thing happening today, given that Israel is a client state of the US, but in those uncertain days in late spring 1967, things were not so cozy between the US and Israel. Mr. Nassif is to be commended for reminding us all of the tragedy that befell the Liberty, and how volitile that region was forty years ago. "

" That would be all fine and dandy Doug; but why just Israel? Why not mention all other "accidental" incidences? Are there no other countries that have "accidentally" attacked the U.S.? In fact, more so, have we ourselves not had "accidental" incidences? We best be keeping our mouth shut, in this glass house of ours!!! "

" Sometimes intelligence fails. (Al Qaeda attacks the U.S. and we are made aware that Bin Laden is hiding in Afghanistan. So therefore we start a war with Iraq based on the intelligence information claiming deadly weapons of mass capacity are in Iraq. No weapons existed, but we are now in a futile war.) Certainly the intelligence capabilities of the modern day U.S. would be considered more effective than that of Israel's 40 years ago, but yet it still made a huge mistake. Your letter sounds extremely anti-Israeli, Mr. Nassif. "

" One incident versus thousands of incidents of Arab and Palestinian agression against the US and Isreal. Moshe Dayan was militarily trained before becoming the leader of Isreal and might not have seriously considered the reprocussions that could have occurred by attacking the USS Liberty. I still stand with Isreal, a true ally and friend of the United States "
