DICKINSON (AP) - Dickinson State University President Lee Vickers says he will retire from the job at the end of this year.

Vickers announced his decision on Monday. He called state Board of Higher Education President John Q. Paulsen on Sunday about his decision and followed that with a letter to DSU faculty and staff on Monday.

Vickers and his wife, Deanna, have two children who live in Phoenix, and they intend to move there.

Vickers was hired by the Higher Education Board on Feb. 24, 1999, after serving as president of Francis Marion University near Florence, S.C., since 1994.

He is DSU's ninth president.

A native of Laramie, Wyo., Vickers joined Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, in 1971 and was named its president in 1978. He served there until moving to South Carolina.

Vickers was a leading candidate to replace North Dakota University System Chancellor Robert Potts when Potts left last year as the result of a dispute with North Dakota State University President Joseph Chapman.

Vickers withdrew after the board voted to shorten the interim chancellor's term from a possible 24 months to 10 months.
