10 years ago (1997):The winner of four national championships in the past four years has announced that there would be no fifth.

Reigning four-time WISSOTA Modified national points champion Leo Burkhardsmier of Bismarck said he will not pursue a fifth title. Instead, he will focus on big shows around the country, while also doing what he can to help Ivan Sailer make the Bismarck Raceway a success. Burkhardsmier said his decision not to run for points was based on several reasons, including boredom, challenge, new rules in WISSOTA and his desire to race three different classes. That includes the new IMCA class.

20 years ago (1987): It may have looked like Brian Rosin and Shirley Olgeirson were doing high-speed hopping down the bunny trail. Actually, they were walking. Race walking.

Meanwhile, Arnie Falk and Becky Clairmont made the 10-K runners feel like they were walking.

Throw in the brother-sister combination of Brian and Nora Beehler and you have all six winners in the American Lung Association's Bunny Hop road race.

Warm temperatures and a mellow wind brought out 453 runners and walkers.

50 years ago (1957): UNDERWOOD - Kenny Becker, a 1954 Jamestown College graduate, will take over as athletic coach at Underwood High School.

Becker, a former Wilton coach, will take over for Bill Zwarych, who is leaving Underwood to become the new basketball coach at Mandan.

Becker was Zwarych's assistant for two years. Prior to that, he was at Wilton for one year.

At New Salem, Becker was a four-sport athlete. He won all-state Class B honors when the Holsteins basketball team won third place in the 1949 state tournament. He also captured the state broad jump championship in 1949. He won 11 letters at Jamestown College.
