Mayville St. 82, Cedarville 81

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (AP) - Mayville State held off a late rally to beat Cedarville University 82-81 Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division II men's basketball tournament.

The Comets (25-8), who have won nine straight games, will play Northwest College in Monday's semifinals.

Matt Stenehjem's field goal with just over two minutes to play turned out to be the game-winner. Stenehjem scored 14 points for the Comets, who were eliminated from the tournament in last year's quarterfinals.

Ronald Howard came up big for the Comets again, leading all scorers with 26 points.

Monty Rogers had 20 points and eight rebounds and Tremel Gilot added 12 points.

The first half featured a series of lead changes. Cedarville was up 16-13 when the Comets strung together seven straight points for a 20-16 lead with 13:30 left in the half. They stretched the lead to 53-42 at the half.

Cedarville got within striking distance late. It cut the deficit to one point twice in the last two minutes, but Eric Leininger's long shot as time was running out missed the mark. Leininger had 12 points.

Mayville St. 88, Florida Memorial 72

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (AP) - Ronald Howard keyed a big run in the first half and finished with 28 points as Mayville State beat Florida Memorial 88-72 on Friday in the second round of the NAIA men's national basketball tournament.

Howard scored 10 straight points during one stretch of the first half. The run came on the heels of a 10-0 run by Florida Memorial.

Monty Rogers scored 21 points and Marques Benjamin added 13 for the Comets.
