10 years ago (1997):Century set the tone early in skating to an 8-3 victory over Mandan in West Region hockey at VFW All Seasons Arena.

Two goals within 36 seconds before the game was two minutes old and three short-handed goals by CHS proved too much to overcome for Mandan, which wrapped up its regular season at 2-13 in league play and 5-16 overall.

A more telling statistic was Century's 3-2 scoring edge with the Braves on the power play. However, it virtually became a 3-3 standoff when Mandan's third goal came just as another CHS penalty expired.

Still, that proved humbling for the Braves.

"It's disappointing," Mandan coach Mike Huglen said. "We got outhustled ... that's what happens."

CHS coach Mike Wald said, "That comes from a lot of hard work. You create your own opportunities and we capitalized on them."

CHS forward Luke Deeter and goaltender Ryan Fecho returned and had strong games. Deeter scored three goals and Fecho turned aside 21 shots as CHS improved to 8-6 in the West Region and 10-8-1 overall.

"It's the best game I've seen us play this year," Deeter said after notching his first varsity hat trick. "We forechecked really well and made our shots count."

20 years ago (1987): When Ty Hauglie's 3-point field goal plopped through the net with 48 seconds to play, there was no reason to believe the Century guard had just scored the game-winning basket.

But some ensuing confusion on the St. Mary's end of the court sabotaged hopes of a Saints response as Century held onto a 48-47 prep basketball win.

The win at the St. Mary's gym enables CHS to even its record at 8-8 on the season, while St. Mary's dropped to 4-13.

Hauglie, a 5-foot-10 junior, had been on the court only 26 seconds when he canned his game-winning bomb, his only shot of the night. He said he hesitated to put the ball up from long range with Century down 47-45, but not because he was fresh off the bench.

"At first I was (hesitant)," he said. "We were trying to get it inside, but it wasn't open, so I decided to take the shot."

Hauglie said shooting "cold" has never been a big deal for him.

"I'm just lucky I can do it," he said. "and I'm more comfortable outside that inside."

Hauglie has now accounted for 15 of his 42 points from 3-point range.

St. Mary's coach Russ Ferrie said Hauglie may well have been wide open on the shot, but should not have been.

"On the floor we've got to realize that there's only one shot we can give up that will put us in a negative situation ... when we're up by two with 40-some seconds left," he noted. "As a coaching staff that's what we're asking now 'why was he that wide open?' "

Sean Burain led the Patriots with 15 points, while Ryan Peck added 11.

For the Saints, Marc Schmaltz had 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Gerald Roller added 16 points.

50 years ago (1957): One of the most colorful basketball contests of the season will be staged at the Memorial Building when Bismarck High School entertains a new rival from the territory capital to the south, Pierre, S.D.

The spoils will be more than prestige: A Sitting Bull Trophy designed by South Dakota artist Oscar Howe, will go to the victor and a buffalo skull to the vanquished.

Governors of the two states, John E. Davis of North Dakota and Joe Foss of the visitors, are expected to be interested spectators. Bismarck Principal C. W. Leifur will introduce dignitaries after the game with Gov. Davis presenting the trophies.

The contest pits two representatives with sparkling records. Pierre has a 12-2 mark, including 12 straight wins before a loss at Miller. The local Demons have a 13-2 mark, the last eight victories in succession.

Last season the South Dakotans proved ungracious hosts. Bismarck, playing its fifth game of the year, headed north with a 59-46 loss and a bleached buffalo skull. Pierre put the "Governor's Trophy" in its award case.

Pierre officials indicated they did not know if the Sitting Bull Trophy would be cast in time. The buffalo skull, however, is ready. This year it's been painted to prevent decay.

Among the other personages, Pierre is sending up five cheerleaders, plus four students elected governor, lieutenant governor, first lady and secretary of state. Bismarck has elected the same.
