Longtime Valley City State coach, AD, dies in Arizona

VALLEY CITY (AP) - Bill Osmon, a longtime Valley City State University coach and athletic director for whom the school's fieldhouse is named, has died in Arizona, school officials announced Thursday. He was 89.

Osmon died Tuesday in Mesa, Ariz., where he lived during the winter, officials said. The McVille native became the head basketball coach at Valley City State College in 1947 and athletic director the following year, school officials said in a statement. His teams won a total of 24 conference championships in four different sports.

The 2006-07 New Salem girls basketball team wasn't the first in the program to go through a regular season without a loss. The 1993 team also went unbeaten in the regular season and stayed that way until the state championship game where it lost to Minot Ryan.
