10 years ago (1997):This time, the University of Mary didn't waste a comeback. This time, a freshman wouldn't let them.
Nathan Goracke's running jumper with :07 left capped a comeback from 14 points down and gave the Marauders a 63-62 win over Mayville State at the Activity Center.
More importantly, it drew the Marauders even with the Comets at the top of the North Dakota College Athletic Conference.
Goracke finished the game with 14 points, second only to Marc Hawley's 20 for U-Mary.
Goracke was instrumental in bringing the Marauders back from the dead. Trailing 58-44 with 8:59 left, U-Mary launched a comeback similar to the one it had at Mayville. U-Mary lost that game 72-70.
Goracke responded by scoring nine of the Marauders' last 11 points.
20 years ago (1987): It was the longest rally of a long nit. Finally, the ball slapped off Jill Schedel's hands and found the hole in Century's defense.
It was the fifth and deciding game. And Schedel's hot not only stopped a CHS rally, it pushed Bismarck to a 15-9 victory, giving them the match 3-2 in a volleyball tug-of-war at the CHS gym.
Schedel was the golden child in the fifth game. She served when BHS scored seven straight points to go up 11-1. Then, when CHS pulled within 12-9, her kill gave BHS lucky No. 13 and the Demons closed it out.
Mary Jo Ehrmantraut, who had the hardest hits of the evening, collected 10 last-touch points and led the Demons with 12 kills. Nancy Hill led the team in assists with 21 and Colleen Letteer was tops in blocks with seven.
Sarah Martin paced CHS with 13 spikes and 10 points. Berta Scott added 10 points and Nicole Berreth led the Patriots in assists with seven.
50 years ago (1957): The fast-breaking Bismarck High School Demons took over undisputed first place in the Class A Western Division by virtue of a 59-42 racking of Rugby.
The win gives the Demons a 9-2 conference standing.
The high-flying Demons, enjoying a six-game winning streak, and having yet to suffer defeat on the home floor, posted period leads of 10-4, 26-16 and 42-29.
Denny Arndt led the Demons well-balanced scoring barrage swishing 17 points including 7 of 9 from the charity line. Bob Schaumberg followed with 16 and did a tremendous job on the boards. Jim Simle and Bill Leifur had 16 and 10, respectively.
