“I saw it myself for 30 seconds from about 100 feet away. I’ve been around animals all my life. I’m not an idiot.”

— DuWayne Hendrickson, of the Minot area, claimed to have seen a young mountain lion near his home on the east edge of the city on Jan. 10. Greg Gullickson, an outreach biologist with the state Game and Fish Department, investigated and took photos of tracks. “We have to figure out how to tell the world — how to focus our message — and people will be flocking here (to North Dakota). This is an historic opportunity. Take some of that state budget surplus and secure the state’s future. Plan for it. Take care of the infrastructure. I think what North Dakota has not done is to tell its story very well. It’s a good-news story in a pessimistic time in the country.”

— Joel Kotkin, speaking in Grand Forks recently. He is a scholar with a public policy group based in Washington and the author of “Rebuilding America’s Productive Economy: A Heartland Development Strategy.” He said that with the state’s resources, it should become a leader in the energy independence effort and could absorb a significant number of the nation’s growing population. He envisioned growth of 200,000 or 300,000 people in the coming 50 years.

“One of the roles of ecumenism is to learn each other’s resources. The message of Jesus is too important, too central, to get it lost in a type of possessiveness.”

— Sister Kathleen Atkinson, of the University of Mary, talking about bringing a professor from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, to speak at a Christian leadership event at U-Mary this week.

“We were brought together for (a) tournament, and even though we had never practiced before, we worked so well as a team.We were doing things that usually take lots of practice. It’s hard to explain, but it felt like we had been playing together a long time. We’ve put in more time together, and because of that, we feel we’re becoming a better team. (The World University Games) is a huge event ... the best teams in the world will be there. We’re excited.”

— Stephanie Sambor, 22, a student at the University of North Dakota and originally from Bismarck, who is a member of a curling team that is competing in the major tournament in Pinerolo, Italy. The tournament is second in size only to the Winter Olympics.
