A black and white head attached to a dressed out carcass were all that remained in a grassy pasture north of Amidon.

It appears someone helped himself to a 600-pound black-and-white-faced steer between Oct. 12 and Oct. 15, butchering it right there on the spot.

The crime occurred about 17 miles north of Marmarth, less than 80 yards off old Highway 16.

Richard Knopp, of Golva, a member of the Horsecreek Grazing Association, discovered the butchered critter.

He contacted Slope County Sheriff Pat Lorge, who's investigating.

Anyone who knows anything about the rustling incident is asked to call Lorge at 879-6271.

The North Dakota Stockmen's Association has a $5,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction in the case.

The old Highway 16 is an open range road, allowing the thieves to proceed with the crime without the hindrance of a fence.

Apple of their pie

Heather Peterson is an award-winning pie baker.

She's only 14, but she can turn out a pie that looks and tastes to perfection.

When she got drafted to bake 100 pies for Crosby's annual lutefisk supper Saturday, she said "yes," but provisionally.

Heather knew she needed a little help, and she got it from her mom, dad, two sisters, three brothers, and her grandparents.

She is, after all the "apple of their pie."

Her commitment truly became a family affair and everyone pitched in to help.

Even baby sister Emily, 4, learned to core apples, and Rebecca, 6, stirred in spices, while brothers Ben and Josh washed and sliced the apples.

Heather, with help, will make apple, sour cream raisin, pumpkin and pecan pies to sell at the supper.

They'll sell a slice for $1.50, or a whole pie for $7.

Heather's been baking and selling 30 pies a week at farmers markets in Ray and Crosby.

She's become so gifted, her pies, with their delicate fluting in the crust, look almost too perfect, and she gets asked if they're truly homemade.

"I've had people ask me that," Heather said.

Her proceeds, along with those of other family members who make and grow things to sell at the markets, have been pooled so the family could enjoy traveling together as part of their home school instruction.

This summer, Heather won the first-ever rhubarb cook off at the Divide County Fair with her orange cream rhubarb pie.

Unfortunately, it won't be among pie offerings at Saturday's supper.

" to liberal Democrat. . . isn't that like the party; equality for all . . . at the expense of everyone else. Cradle to the grave money for everyone. Grow up and make the best of what you have. There will never be enough for everyone at the expense of a few. "

" Let's see. ‘If I am a little short of money, I have the right to take "my fair share: out of the cash register. If I am homeless, all I have to do is find a home I like and move in, after all you owe me at least that much. I have a taste for prime beef, so it is my right to slaughter your cattle because I really like good beef. After all, those rich ranchers need to share their abundance with those of us who don't really want to work for a living because we're far too busy getting our next batch of drugs to do something so silly as work.' (Or a similar problem). Who in the world filled your head with that kind of sewage? I don't care what their excuse is, they are just a common thief. A thief is a thief is a thief, and don't come up with the "I really like steak" excuse for the scummy creep(s). "

" The story was about a butchered steer, not about any political party. I'm not sure it was a needy family that got the meat, rather some one who just wanted some fresh meat! Perhaps it was the rancher's neighbors who needed the meat. I've met a lot of needy people over the years and most of them are too proud to ask for help, much less steal something to draw attention to themselves and their lack of income. "

" Apparently, you read more into comments than the authors are really saying. No one is condoning the theft of livestock, but merely pointing out that it isn't a big gang rounding up herds or portions of heard and trucking them across the border. You might be a former rancher, but you sound lik Oprah when you distort the truth so much to get an emotional response. "

" Apparently, according to some, if you are down on your luck and need to feed your family, it is OK to take a farmer/ranchers calf and butcher it. However, if someone is down on their luck and needs to feed their family, goes to a store and loads up a grocery cart and tries to leave without paying, they are arrested for shoplifting. Go figure! "

" it is a federal law, i know my grandfather was caught butchering a bull, and was sent to the pen for 1 year. yes he was trying to feed his family, but that is no excuse to steal. i hope they catch the men or women and put them in jail. "

RUSTLER wrote on Nov 6, 2006 10:57 AM:

" Cattle rustling implies that more than one cow was stolen, and in the living condition when it was taken. Rather, this case isn't so much about rustling, but more about a hungry person needing meat enough, that they were willing to risk breaking laws to get it. I've worked for food drives and seen what goes into food pantries. Most of the food is cast off or expired stuff no one esle would want. There is no decent meat in food pantries. Unless you consider expired CANNED beef from the USDA something you would eat. Another thing that is sad, is it was VERY unresponsible for the online editor on duty to allow the ridiculous and childish liberal vs. conservative unmitigated rubbish to be posted when it in no way relates to this story. "

CLS wrote on Nov 6, 2006 10:43 AM:

" How did cattle rustling become political? What does the Dems or Republicans have to do with this. Not everything is political. Someone worked hard to raise this steer or paid good money for it, so I guess it’s ok if a restler is hungry to butcher it on the spot. I don’t think so. Liberal democrat get a life would you?!!!! "

Punker wrote on Nov 6, 2006 10:40 AM:

" Haven't we overlooked the possibility that these "rustlers" could be a pack of roaming mountain lions trying to send us a message??? "

PO3 wrote on Nov 6, 2006 8:32 AM:

" The message I get from our politicians is if you don't like a law, go ahead and break it. Best example that comes to mind is our borders and immigration, the powers to be we elect to enforce our laws don't like those laws. So they break them, same thing goes for cattle rustlers, if you don't like some law break it, cuz our leaders do regularly. Hope the steaks were good. "

" "liberal democrat" - I didn't think that people like you could survive living in ND! I moved here from MN to escape people like you. If a preson in ND needs food for their family I KNOW that he or she could ask ANYONE here in our wonderful state for food and would get it! Having been in need of food before I didnt' even need to use the food pantries. "

Not a Democrat wrote on Nov 6, 2006 7:14 AM:

" I think Liberal Democrat is really a Conservative Far Right Republican who wants to get people angry at Democrats so they vote Republican. Heck, its what Republicans have been doing to our nation's credit these past few years - stealing the country blind and doubling our national debt to about $ 9,000,000,000,000.00. WOW! "

sensible democrat wrote on Nov 5, 2006 4:18 PM:

" Liberal democrat, you're a communist and give democrats a bad name. People work hard for their keep and if you advocate the stealing of another persons family, then you need to have a reality check. There are plenty of food shelters to help people, cattle rustlers should be put in jail. It's democrats like you, that want to drastically redistribute wealth, that scare away the undecided voter. If everyone knew they didn't have to earn their keep, that someone else would work hard and give them hand outs this society would crumble. "

ME wrote on Nov 5, 2006 3:04 PM:

Liberal Democrat wrote on Nov 5, 2006 10:49 AM:

" Cattle Rustlers? It could well be someone was down on their luck and needed to feed their family. There are so many starving people in our communities and I can only hope the democrats take control of this country and share the good fortunes of so many with those without any. Us Democrats have worked very hard to change this failed country into one that will share evenly with everybody and with the backing of the union philosophy we have imported from Europe, our goal is closer to our reach every day. "

" Cattle rustlers kill and dress out the beef on the spot. How shameful. Sadly, it is not a new tactic for the rustler. My late uncle discovered a group of ruslters (wish I could say their name) in Morton County back in the Summer of 1966. I was at my grandparents farm and saw a fire burning in the south pasture and yelled for my uncle. He got his hosre and went down there and found the group rebranding cattle and they had butchered some of the cattle. The Sheriff was called. One of the rustlers got away in his pickup - the fool showed up at the farm a couple hours later, bleeding from his left shoulder, asking for help. My aunt pulled a shotgun out and told him to leave. Which he did. I certainly hope someone comes forward to give law enforcement information on who butchered this man's beef. "
