Virgil Hill plans another fight

FARGO (AP) - Virgil Hill says he has negotiated a deal to fight Henry Maske in Germany, probably in January.

Hill defeated Maske 10 years ago to claim the WBA, WBO and IBF light heavyweight title belts. Both boxers are 42.

"It's amazing, at the tender age of 42, everybody wants to beat up on the old boy," Hill said.

He negotiated the fight himself, he said, though manager Bill Sorensen is still part of his boxing team.

"It was just that in this particular instance, I negotiated it myself," Hill said. "It was great. I got everything I wanted and even more."

He declined to disclose the fight's purse except to say it involves "seven figures."

Hill is 50-5 with 23 knockouts. Maske is 30-1. He has not fought since losing the only bout of his career to Hill.

The North Dakota boxer was preparing Saturday night to be the color commentator on a pay-per-view card featuring a light heavyweight title fight between Roy Jones Jr. and Prince Badi in Boise, Idaho. Hill was to be joined by the veteran boxing broadcast team of Barry Tompkins and Al Bernstein.

"So far, it's been pretty intimidating," Hill said earlier in the week. "Everybody is taking notes except for me."

Hill had praise for the announcers.

"They're good," he said. "They reassured me I'll do just fine. I trust them."

Junior Nationals

FARGO - Bismarck's Scott Glasser was about a minute away from collecting a junior national freestyle championship.

However, returning champion Jon Reader of Michigan didn't let that happen.

Reader trailed Glasser 3-0 halfway through the third period Saturday at the Fargodome, but got a reversal and put the Bismarck High standout on his back for a pin and the title in the 160-pound weight class.

"It was a stunning turn of events," said Bismarck coach Scott Knowlen. "Scott had a 3-0 lead and he was on top. We thought the lead was safe. But in a flurry, Reader turned it around and secured the touch pin. It was very disappointing, but Scott still had an outstanding tournament."

Championships were decided on a best 2-out-of-3 period format. Glasser won the first period 1-0, but lost the second 2-1.

The five-time Class A state champion and University of Minnesota recruit finished the tournament with an 8-1 record and gained All-American status for the fourth time.

Brian Reisenauer of Fargo also earned All-American honors, placing sixth at 98 pounds.

Section 8 Tournament

Washburn and Beulah will meet today at 1:30 p.m. at Mandan's Memorial Ballpark for the Class B Section 8 American Legion baseball tournament championship and a berth in this week's Class B state tournament.

Beulah advanced Saturday with an 8-4 win over Hazen. The win set up a rematch of Friday's semifinal game, won by Washburn 1-0 in eight innings.

Casey Hausauer, Travis Voegele, Tim Wolf, Ike Michaelson and Levi Lawson had two hits apiece to lead Saturday's 14-hit assault. Voegele, Michaelson and Lawson each had a double. All nine Beulah regulars had at least one hit.

Alex Hermes had two hits and a run batted in for Hazen.

Hazen started the day with a 9-2 win over the Mandan A's in loser-out action.

Mike Clarys went 4-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in for the winners, and teammate Sheldon Dacar went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Alex Philion, Jake Oster and Kris Kruckenberg each added a pair of singles.

On the mound, Kruckenberg went all seven innings, allowing just four hits along the way.
