VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) - A professor of early childhood at the University of South Dakota has been picked to serve as affiliate liaison of the governing board of the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

"I am honored to be elected to the NAEYC governing board," Gera Jacobs said in a release from USD. "I look forward to building on my years of teaching and research to support NAEYCs efforts to serve all young children and their families."

The 80-year-old NAEYC is dedicated to improving the quality of programs for children from birth through age 8, according to USD.

Jacobs, who taught for 16 years in preschool through eighth-grade classrooms, has published articles in national and regional journals. In 2002, she was named South Dakota Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
