The Beulah Cyclones did what they had to do to beat the Bismarck Reps Sunday in the finale of the Bismarck B Classic Legion baseball tournament at Bismarck Municipal Ballpark. They put the ball in play.Beulah took advantage of nine - that's right - nine Bismarck errors and came from four runs down to beat the Reps 8-7 in eights innings. With the win, Beulah claimed the outright championship based on its 3-1 record and head-to-head win over Enderlin, another 3-1 team.
Tim Wolf went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in, and Tyler Bauman pitched eight innings to get the victory. Unlike his counterpart for Bismarck, Bauman got defense behind him, and neither of the Cyclones' two errors led to runs.
"We were down the whole tournament," Beulah coach Steve Folmer said. "I thought we quit against Mandan (Beulah's only loss), but I told them you've got to be a better baseball player when you're getting beat. Everybody is good when things are going your way, but it's tough when you're frustrated."
The Cyclones played through that frustration and they got more than a little help from Bismarck, which had a lot of trouble fielding, throwing and catching the ball.
The Reps scored two in the first inning on Nate Schlosser's triple. Starting pitcher Drew Hausauer and catcher Tyler Johnson came home off Schlosser's drive to right. Hausauer had two hits, drove in a run and scored twice. Johnson was 3-for-4 with a double, one run batted in and he scored twice.
Zach Klabo and Hausauer drove in runs in the three-run third.
But three Reps errors in the third inning led to three runs, only one earned, that cut Bismarck's lead to 5-4.
"Errors can be contagious like hitting," Bismarck coach Mike Gustavsson said. "Errors can be overcome and that's what our kids need to understand."
The Reps spent six innings walking a tightrope behind Hausauer. He scattered nine hits, walked two and struck out two, and gave up six runs. But only two of those were earned, and he left in the seventh inning with a 7-6 lead.
Hausauer fielded as well as he pitched, as long as he was on the mound. He had four assists and started a nifty 1-6-3 double play that got the Reps out of the second inning with a 5-1 lead.
Beulah picked away at the lead, getting single runs in the fifth and sixth to get within one.
Darron Olson came on in the seventh for the Reps and held the lead until two were out. Levi Olson reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on a wild pitch. He then scored the tying run on a throwing error, one of two miscues in the inning by the Reps.
"It's been happening a lot," Gustavsson said. "Nobody wants to step up and make plays. And kids aren't thinking about what they want to do with the ball."
Travis Voegele led off the Beulah eighth with a single that fell between three Bismarck players on the infield. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out to second.
Bauman pitched a hitless eighth to close things out.
"In that last inning, everything was quiet when we came in," Gustavsson said. "They tightened up and they were afraid to go out there and actually win it."
Bismarck finished the tournament 2-2.
