Psychologist, columnist and radio personality Dr. Joyce Brothers will be the keynote speaker May 6 at a dinner in Bismarck celebrating the 15th anniversary of the God's Child Project.Brothers, a well-known American psychologist, is a regular columnist for Reader's Digest and Good Housekeeping, and broadcasts on radio as well. She also appears in more than 175 newspapers, reaching 22 million readers. She has written 10 books and was listed for six years in the Gallup poll's list of "most admired women."
Brothers' topic at the dinner at the Ramkota Inn in Bismarck will be "Compassionate Giving in a Complicated World." A question-and-answer session will follow her presentation. All proceeds from the dinner will benefit the care and education programs of the God's Child Project.
Jena Gullo, executive director of the God's Child Project North Central in Bismarck, said that Brothers was a great fit for this event, because of her focus on family values, health, educational issues and children.
The God's Child Project was founded in 1991 by Bismarck native Patrick Atkinson to care for and educate poverty-stricken children in Guatemala. The God's Child Project has grown to include a worldwide network of clinics, schools, nutrition sites, foster homes and legal advocacy and community development centers.
Among other awards, Atkinson has received the Guatemalan National Congressional Medal of Honor, and in June 2006, he and the project will receive the Kiwanis Clubs International World Service Award, whose past recipients have included Mother Teresa, Nancy Reagan, Rosalynn Carter and Audrey Hepburn.
In Guatemala, the project now cares for and educates 2,600 orphaned, abandoned and poverty-stricken children, and assists another 8,500 single or abandoned mothers and their dependents. Other programs have been established in El Salvador, Africa and the U.S.
Asocial begins at 5:30 p.m., and the dinner and program are at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are $50 ($35 is tax-deductible) and are on sale at Herberger's, the Rainbow Shop, Divine Intimacy or by calling the God's Child office at 255-7956.
